Maybe you, like 36 million other folks, just learned cyber-thieves hacked your Xfinity data back in October. Passwords, sure. But for some lucky customers, “names, contact information, last four digits of social security numbers, dates of birth and/or secret questions and answers” as well, according to the email I got today.
Why do you suppose it took the monopoly company eight weeks to let us know?
Here’s a hint. It turns out Senator Cruise (try googling “Smarmy Ted”) was about to send an important letter to the Federal Communications Commission on just the topic of data security rules for the broadband monopoly industry. Shocker spoiler alert: he’s against them.
On Tuesday, December 12th, Mr. Ted and several of his buddies demanded the FCC withdraw its proposed
… requirements governing notification to the FCC, law enforcement, and consumers, as well as…recordkeeping requirements with respect to breaches and notifications…
And here we are, one week later. Couldn’t have 36 million people fuming over how to change their Xfinity passwords before the Loan Star Senator squashed data-breach notification rules, now, could we?
