The Summary
There are 28 editorial cartoons in this diary on several issues including the Russia-Ukraine war, which is now into its second year, as well as GOP shenanigans. Vladimir Putin is depicted as a much-diminished character who expected a quick victory in Ukraine and has to contend with a long, protracted war with fierce resistance by Ukrainian forces.
As usual, Republicans are portrayed this week by editorial cartoonists as being clueless and not acting in the best interests of the country. The absurdity that is FOX “News” is seen as spreading lies — not a surprise to most people who pay attention to real news. Donald Trump showed up a few days ago at an event in Ohio but was mocked for ignoring environmental and safety concerns, while weakening regulations that end up destroying communties.
I’ll post at least another 20 or so cartoons on a variety of issues in the comments section. Thanks for supporting this diary.

One Year Into the Russia-Ukraine War
A year after the war started, there seems to be no end in sight. The killings continue, and the number of refugees grows. The human and financial costs are enormous.
Some analysts believe that the war may last several more years.
NBC News looks at the war in numbers.
- So far 100,000 Russian and 13,000 Ukrainian service personnel have been killed, according to Western leaders and Ukraine’s armed forces. And more than 7,000 Ukrainian civilians have died in the last year as a result of war, including at least 400 children.
- More than 8 million Ukrainians have left the country and not returned… Russia has had its own mass migration as a result of the war. At least 419,000 people fled the country in the first half of 2022.
- Before the invasion, Russia controlled about 16,000 square miles of Ukraine, which rose to 62,000 square miles, about 27% of the country’s landmass… This grew to 62,000 square miles by March 2022, or about 27% of Ukraine’s territory. A Ukrainian counteroffensive won back almost 29,000 square miles by February 2023. Today, Russia controls nearly 18% of Ukraine’s internationally recognized territory.
- More than $166 billion in military, humanitarian and financial aid was pledged to Ukraine by 40 different countries and groups from Jan. 24, 2022, to Jan. 15, 2023.
