Although many Republicans “excuse” their most outrageous proclamations by saying they were “just joking”, conservatives are not known for their sense of humor. Right-wing politicians rarely have them rolling in the aisles. But once in a while, one shows ability.
During a speech before the Washington Press Club last night, Rep. Nacy Mace let fly at a variety of targets. She hit more than she missed. Her prime victims were fellow Republicans — including Trump. Talking about the liar extraordinaire, George Santos, she got in a three-fer — Santos, the ex-President, and Baretta Barbie
“Really, who lies about playing college volleyball? Who does that? If you’re gonna lie, at least make it about something big, like you actually won the 2020 presidential election.”
She further slammed Santos, “C'mon, George, you give Republicans a bad name. And that's Lauren Boebert's job” Adding after a pause, “Just kidding, Lauren, don’t shoot.”
The current Speaker of the House got his,
“There’s one reason I was chosen to be the Republican speaker tonight, and it's because Kevin McCarthy couldn't get the votes.”
Then referring to his abject capitulation to the GOP rebels, “I haven't seen someone assume that many positions to appease crazy Republicans since Stormy Daniels,”
Alluding to the fact that McCarthy suffered through 15 rounds of voting, she explained that his ascension was assured because she said,
“We all knew that Matt Gaetz would never let the vote get to 18,”
She added, “I do have a message from Matt — he really wanted to be here tonight, but he couldn’t find a babysitter.”
She dumped on another prominent Republican loony.
“Georgia gave us both Raphael Warnock and Marjorie Taylor Green. Some say that’s bipartisan. It’s not — it’s bipolar.”
Adding, “Recently, there’s been a lot of talk about antisemitism. But since Marjorie Taylor Greene started behaving, the rate of Jewish space laser attacks is now zero.”
And in a remark referencing 1/6, that engendered equal amounts of laughter and groans, she put to rest the idea that the GOP is comically challenged.
“I know everyone thinks Republicans aren’t funny. But if you get a bunch of us together, we can be a real riot.”
Should she quit her day job? Probably not. But I have heard worse.
