Lack of SCOTUS Ethics

Clarence Thomas might well be the most blatantly corrupt justice in recent SCOTUS history. In light of recent disclosures about unethical conduct by several justices, no wonder the nine US Supreme Court justices oppose any code of conduct for themselves — lest serious problems come to the fore that might embarrass them or worse.
One of the very best and smartest journalists around, Elie Mystal — the justice correspondent for the Nation magazine — made a persuasive case for Congress to act in this MSNBC interview over the weekend. He points to “ethical rot” in the highest court in the land. Emphasizing the crucial need for independent, ethical oversight, Mystal makes a forceful argument saying that these are “nine people who believe themselves above the law and better than the rest of us… these people are not gods, not kings, they work for us.”
Political sympathies aside — and regardless of how the US Supreme Court has operated in the past — the time has come for some accountability. Period.
Harlan Crow’s company said tenant protections threatened its profits. Thomas twice voted to end them while Crow lavished him with gifts.
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas voted to end federal tenant protections that his billionaire benefactor’s company says threatened its real estate profit margins, according to corporate documents reviewed by The Lever. Thomas did not disclose his relationship with real estate billionaire Harlan Crow, nor did he recuse himself from the 2021 case, despite its potential impact on Crow Holdings...
Recent reporting by ProPublica found that Thomas failed to disclose two decades’ worth of luxury gifts provided by Crow, as well as Crow’s purchase of properties owned by Thomas, in apparent violation of longstanding federal ethics rules.
“The Supreme Court has failed to reach consensus on an ethics code of conduct specific to the nine justices despite internal discussion dating back at least four years,” the Washington Post reports.

This Issue Spells Trouble for the GOP
After the US Supreme Court overturned Roe vs Wade last year, the Republican Party has struggled to deal with overwhelming national sentiment against that landmark ruling. The results of this opposition to restrictions on abortion were quite evident in the 2022 Elections last November.
With huge majorities opposed to banning medical abortions, the GOP is trying desperately to keep this issue off the ballot in 2024, and with two red states failing to pass severe abortion bans, one would think you’d see a change in political strategy.
If you thought that, you would be wrong. Republicans are hell-bent on clinging to a failed strategy and are advocating a national ban on abortion.
Donald Trump “indicated he would consider signing into law legislation banning abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy if he is elected president again in 2024,” Axios reports...
“The new comments came as a departure from his campaign’s previous support for individual states deciding restrictions — as abortion again looms over the upcoming major election cycle.”
