Massacres Spur New Gun Legislation In Texas
In the wake of a number of recent mass shootings, new gun legislation has been passed in Texas. The legislature passed, and governor Greg Abbott signed into law, a requirement that everyone above the age of five in Texas carry a firearm at all times. No background check, training or permit required because…. freedom (and gun lobby money). The governor stated during the signing ceremony, which took place just after midnight on Saturday, “Now every Texan can feel safe. If they are confronted by a mass shooter, they are equipped to return fire. And if they get shot, because they broke the law and weren’t carrying, well that’s on them.” The governor pointed out, specifically, that kindergartners need not fear going to school now that they will be armed. He referenced a program, sponsored by the NRA, that gives access to specially designed assault rifles that are downsized for their tiny hands.
The governor also pointed out that the new law would encourage Texans to settle differences with their neighbors in an immediate and direct way, thereby freeing the courts from pesky litigation. Shortly after the legislation became law two 16 year olds, involved in a dispute over a parking spot, emerged from their respective cars and opened fire on each other. After a barrage of gun fire, thanks to their lack of training and poor marksmanship, the only casualties were their two cars. The vehicles sustained multiple hits and were subsequently deemed inoperable. Fortunately, the two kids ran out of ammunition before striking any human beings, as the magazines on their guns only held thirty rounds each. Both kids did, however, vow to have more ammunition next time since, under Texas law, there is no limit to the amount of guns or bullets one can carry.
