Our failures regarding "common sense gun laws" are malignant. The phrase says nothing specific, never translate into a crisp, clear, succinct message in compliance with the 2nd Ammendment. So, please, can Dems try something new?
The population is smarter rhan when Sen. Feinstein introduced and Congress passed, the popular and very successful 1994 Automatic Weapons Ban which, starting with the name, made no sense to gun owners. George W. Bush made imported semiautomatic rifles illegal. Then it expired. And now we have multiple mass murders in a day's time. It can't go on. It's only Dems that can stop them legislatively. But we've failed
Can we try something new?
Forget about "assault weapons." Forget about "weapons of war." Because, wording. Forget about where they're made. Let's target the bullseye (ew. ugly metaphor).
Let's also forget about self-loading, semiautomatic pistols, handguns with magazines that hold 9 - 12 bullets. They're great for shooting at rocks in the desert, but not hunting, or mass murders.
The semiautomatic rifles, which have magazines of 30+ bullets, are easily purchased, on demand, advertised to be as routine and desirable to a teenaged boy as a McDonalds hamburger, not good for hunting, and causing the most damage. One shot can, as we see over and over, IRL, can blow a man's face off. Can obliterate a child's head. Easily purchased on demand....
Automatic rifles are weapons of war, not easily purchased, are very controlled, and require getting a Federal Firearms License (FFL www.atf.gov/... ) is not a simplistic, quick process.
So, new law, incremental progress, imperfect, but easy and an extremely high value change, one line, one page legislation. Common sense. No ban. Just controlled from the wrong people.
Self-loading, semiautomatic rifles from now on require a FFL.
Thoughts? IANAE so corrections are encouraged.
