OK maybe I’m embellishing a bit, but that’s essentially what President Biden is saying with his pregame messaging before tomorrow’s big meeting with Kevin McCarthy, and I personally think we are in for an ***-kicking! I never want to hear that Democrats don’t know how to message again. While the decrepit mainstream political media do their best to obscure strong Dem messaging & normalize the Republican fascist threat we all face, President Biden and Democrats continue to demonstrate they have wisely learned the lessons of the Obama era in dealing with radical Republicans (including on the messaging front). Case in point: the ongoing debt limit drama.
I’m beyond heartened by the Biden-Harris administration’s — and the entire Democratic Party’s — steeliness in refusing to tie budget negotiations to the debt limit, and repeating to moronic “reporters” that there are budget negotiations every year — separate from the debt limit. Their resoluteness also gives me hope that, whether it be the 14th Amendment, platinum coin or whatever, they have a strong contingency plan to raise the limit unilaterally. If they were truly worried about an actual default, I don’t think we’d be seeing such confidence and razor-sharp messaging like this coming from the White House communications team:
White House spokesman Andrew Bates circulated a memo Monday claiming GOP spending cuts would "supercharge the fentanyl crisis" by cutting thousands of agents from the Drug Enforcement Agency, FBI and Border Patrol.
Oh, more of this please! President Biden will then give a speech Wednesday in the Hudson Valley district of a “Biden Republican” House member, LOL. Good luck to the 18 of them in next year’s elections!
I could be wildly off-base to be so overconfident that there is a unilateral backup plan, but this is a far cry from the Obama debt limit standoffs a decade ago. Instead of retreating in the face of media malpractice & normalization of right-wing extremism, the Biden-Harris administration is digging in, clarifying and going for the jugular, pointing out the facts and context that the brain-dead media continues to fail to convey.
It could be just wish-casting, but I think we are about to witness President Biden & Dems wipe the floor with Republicans in this fight. After exposing QOP rottenness & incompetence and rescuing the debt limit hostage, House Republican impotence will be undeniable. Then, let the budget negotiations begin! I, for one, can’t wait to see the specifics of the Republican cuts that all those “Biden Rs” voted for. Their excuse that they only voted for it because they knew it wouldn’t become law, is simply not sustainable. The media gave them a pass, acting like they actually passed a spending bill (infuriating) but in the budget negotiations there will be specifics they can’t evade.
With all that said, will this frankly awesome messaging coming out of the White House be enough to penetrate the just utterly decrepit, brain-dead news media so the American people get a clear picture of what’s going on here? We have a barf-inducing Washington Post editorial hot off the presses about how President Biden needs to hold more press conferences. These people are unbelievable! Thanks to our mind-numbing political “reporters”, most of the country thinks we are in an economic recession when in reality we are far outperforming the rest of the developed world & the economy is, in fact, booming. The list is endless but the brilliant Eric Boehlert’s final piece, “Why is the press rooting against Biden?” , sadly continues to ring true today.
I’m looking forward to seeing what comes of tomorrow’s meeting, but I’m confident in our president and his kick-*** team to save us from Republicans. Now we just need the media to step up for our democracy and stop their bothsiderism.
