When the Department of Justice released a photo of boxes of documents stored in a bathroom and shower at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, it went viral. Social media was full of comments dumping on the wall of boxes that Trump built in the bathroom in the resort’s Lake Room.

And the photo inspired comments like these on Twitter:
- Nothing shows Trump’s shear disregard and disdain for American lives like storing national security secrets in the same room where you take a sh-t
- Whatever the facts of the Trump document case, he certainly has taken bathroom reading to a new height … some online are now calling him “POO-TUS.” The chandelier just an added touch.
- It’s like an episode of “Storage Wars” with Trump selling the blind contents of the bathroom to the highest bidder.
- Plumbing tip, if anything is leaking in the bathroom it should not be classified documents.
It’s pretty hard to flush away that image. But Trump’s enablers are trying hard to clean up the mess. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy gave it a try on Monday. MSNBC reported:
Asked whether it’s a “good look” for Trump to store classified documents in a bathroom, according to the indictment, McCarthy again tried to draw parallels between Trump and Biden’s classified documents cases. “I don’t know. Is it a good picture to have boxes in a garage that opens up all the time? A bathroom door locks,” he said.
Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland tore down McCarthy’s bathroom door defense on CNN:
”Well, it’s the first I’ve seen that particular defense, but is he suggesting that these boxes of classified documents got up and locked the door after people left the bathroom? I’m not quite sure I follow the logic of it.
“Look, the documents were unlawfully in Donald Trump’s possession which was bad enough, which is a violation of the law. But even when given the opportunity to return them to the archives, to turn them back over to the government, Trump refused to do so repeatedly. That’s what he’s being charged with. That obstruction of justice and playing that game of cat and mouse with the government.”
Well, McCarthy’s bathroom locks defense didn’t go down well. So MAGA Republican Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida went on CNN Tuesday morning—just hours before Trump’s arraignment at a federal courthouse in downtown Miami—came up with an even sillier bathroom defense.

Donalds insisted that there was nothing insecure about storing documents in a Mar-a-Lago bathroom because the ex-president’s private club has lots of bathrooms. Here’s Donalds’ multiple-bathrooms defense:
“You guys are throwing up the pictures about they were in a bathroom or on a stage. As somebody who has been to Mar-a-Lago, you just can’t walk through Mar-a-Lago of your own accord because Secret Service is all over the place. So if the documents are in a place, they are in a room, depending on the time of year, you can't even get into said room.
“There are 33 bathrooms at Mar-a-Lago! So don’t act like it’s in some random bathroom that the guests can go into. That's not true!”
As hard as he tried, Donalds just couldn’t make the smell go away.
