DK Quilt Guild: A place for quilters to gather, share ideas, projects, and to make the world a better place, one quilt at a time. Join us and share your thoughts, projects, questions, and tips. Quilters here are at many different levels of skill. Beginners and non-quilters are welcome, too.
We NEED diarists!
Your diary can be elaborate and full of photos, a simple story of your own quilting history or that of someone you love, a discussion of a current project or a technique you're learning, new adventures... You could post quilt retreat-day recipes (things like crockpot meals, so food appears without much attention from you)…
We could do show and tell or open thread, also, but either way, we need diarists to host. It is EASY if you're willing to take the chance. We NEED diarists!

First Happy Birthday, Pam!!! Hope you have a great next year!
I had thought I would do a diary on the applique quilt I’m working on. But the block I’m working on — block #2 — is the most complex, with 56 pieces to be appliqued. I’m down to just 22 to be done, but still. I’ve done block 3 already. Not sure I should have taken this on, but block 2 is the most complex. It gets easier after this.
At any rate, this diary is going to be about the summer quilt I just finished piecing. Other than the top and bottom block, all of the block designs are from Pat Sloan’s Summer Soiree quilt from last year. She did a scrappy block of the week project. It consisted on 12 blocks. I did the 9 blocks I liked best and then added the top and bottom blocks. Her blocks are, for the most part, moderately complicated, which I liked. My top and bottom ones are pretty standard. And the middle one is different deliberately. Not a mistake. Just wanted to add a little more interest.
I like Pat Sloan’s blocks because for they are scrappy. For a summer quilt, I wanted nice bright colors. Also for the first time I’m incorporating memorial pieces. The dark red with blue mums and butterfly are from a bathrobe I made my father.
A note on the concept of the value of a stash. The blue sashing and border, which I really like, I bought some months ago having no idea what I would do with it. I just really liked it. Shortly after I got it home, it became obvious: it was the perfect compliment for the Summer Soiree quilt.
Since this is a summer quilt, I’m not going to use batting in-between the layers, but rather just flannel. Has anyone else done that?
I haven’t found the backing fabric yet, but hopefully this week.
How many of you do scrappy quilts? And what are you quilting /piecing? Love to see pics.
