Trump’s actions regarding the storming of the Capitol on January 6th are distinctly different and far more serious that all the other crimes for which he is being investigated. For the well being of our nation, there has to be consequences for these actions. Attention lately has been on his other crimes as those investigations and legal proceedings have moved along faster. It has already been established that he is a womanizer and sexual abuser. He has been indicted for failing to report the hush money he paid to women he slept with as part of his campaign’s finances. He is likely to be indicated for taking classified documents and failing to follow any of the procedures for handling these materials. These actions are all serious but ultimately they pale in comparison to his attempt to negate the election and seize power.
He should be indicted for his attempt to overthrow the government. The evidence is clear. He had a plan to incite violence and push aside the legitimate electors. It was not a single event but a coordinated plan executed over multiple months involving several states and his supporter groups. There are taped phone calls, his speech to his supporters, and staff members testimony all clearly showing this was a planned attack on the government and Trump was front and center directing it. It is beyond comprehension that many voters do no see these actions as a direct attempt to overthrow the government. Even more concerning is the group that does see this as insurrection and supports it.
I am concerned that he will be convicted on one of his other crimes and the mantra will become something like “he has suffered enough” and so no further actions should be pursed. Although such a trial will further tear our country apart, Trump’s continuing participation in politics is already doing this. There has to be consequences for January 6th.
