The Consequences of Climate Change cannot be ignored indefinitely. Time ran out to avoid climate disasters effecting the entire planet a number of years ago and climatic conditions have now worsened. We can, of course, easily demonstrate that the Republicans have led the political Climate Change Denier’s Movement in America.
As far as the Democrats are concerned, they have acknowledged the certainty of climate change and have taken some minimal steps in response. But truth be told, they have not done nearly enough or publicly acknowledged that the planet is now in a crisis stage. Nor have they proposed anywhere near the financial commitment consistent with being the leading fossil fuel producing/consuming nation on the planet.
They are apparently not immune at a leadership level to the deadly influences of the fossil fuel industry and industrial capitalism.
We are now in the Global Crisis Stage of Climate Change
Global warming is about to take center stage regardless of what the fossil fuel countries and their political ruling elites have to say about it. If the Democrats don’t raise the alarm first, the thoroughly hypocritical Republicans, and their head troll Donald Trump, will use the issue to their advantage, perhaps as early as the 2024 elections. Impossible you say?
No lies or distortions are too big for the Republicans on their path to power and dictatorship. Plus, they have tighter control over what the mass media promotes. No where in the world is there any plan or technology that can quickly do anything to mitigate the damage already done to the climate. Accelerating efforts to curb global warming cannot be relegated to Plan B or C and allow the wrong people to grab control of this emerging global issue.
There is Still Hope, but . . .
Even if every nation started to use all alternative forms of energy immediately, science has suggested that it would take hundreds of years to return the climate to what it once was. However, what we fail to realize is that only the last 15 years have been noticeably worse. Making aggressive across the board efforts leading to noticeable improvement possible much sooner than expected. Are the ruling elites, which surely have been briefed behind the scenes on the situation and know global warming is a planetary threat, planning to ride out the crisis to come and survive while earth’s habitable environments perish along with tens of millions of people and species? Apparently, they may believe they can survive the changes?
This is folly, they must not be allowed to do so.
Industrial Capitalism: The Main Cause of Global Warming
The answer as to why so little has been done to combat global warming is not rocket science. The fossil fuel industry has infected both parties in America to various degrees and is extremely concerned with maintaining its power and dominance over government.
It also fears what will happen to their massive economic empires and their control over government policy it brings if they are widely and publicly held responsible for what is happening. In addition to the fossil fuel companies, environmental destruction and pollution on a global scale has been spearheaded by capitalist industrial development.
Civilization has reached the point where industrialization can longer allow an unrestrained form of capitalism to be in charge of production. It has been demonstrated beyond any dispute that with the profit motive in command, enough resources will never be committed for sufficient mitigation of the environmental destruction and toxic materials being produced.
Turning Back to Science
I believe that science, if funded adequately, can find as yet undiscovered ways to more rapidly accelerate removal of green house gasses from the atmosphere, something we are in desperate need of, along with taking more known steps. The problem in going in this direction is our own globally dominant economic system, industrial capitalism.
A system dependent on fossil fuels that dominates the world. It acts like a hungry monster demanding to be fed. And is dependent on permanent destructive and massive environmental contamination to maintain profits, economic dominance, and exploitation of underdeveloped nations and its own workforce to maintain its internal stability.
War Production is Good for Business, Bad for Everything Else
Perhaps the best example of this is the Great Depression, which only ended after years of extreme economic paralysis after the massive war effort for WWII sparked the economy. Social spending and social progress made during the Depression were imperative and 100% morally justifiable but did not restore capitalism’s version of prosperity.
In point of fact, wasteful spending of taxpayer money on profitable but ultimately wasteful and destructive projects are a hallmark of industrial capitalism. Top of the list is enormous military spending made necessary by the aggressive nature of securing profitable foreign markets and materials explained publicly by claiming it is mostly defense spending to protect our “freedom”.
Followed by the courts, police, record jail populations and the rest of the criminal justice system. Traceable to rampant pockets of street crime all across the nation, most of which flows from the poverty created by capitalist greed and deliberately high, mostly concealed unemployment levels and poor wealth distribution.
The Death of Civilization?
Every single one of us has been made, like it or not, into a contributor to this system in multiple ways. Our unnatural, imbalanced and unhealthy way of life is now threatening the entire planet and has for some time.
The second obstacle, also related to capitalism and the ruling interests which run the industrialized nations, will be the political resistance to committing the resources necessary to address the crisis, no matter who is running government. We need a commitment which rivals or exceeds what was spent on WWII or the Vietnam War.
The powerful interests which dominate government policies behind the scenes as of yet are unwilling to make climate change an important enough issue, nor are they willing to commit enough funds or change their ways. But the ability to keep a lid on what’s happened to the world’s climate is fast giving away to reality.
To be repetitive, when the truth about the planet’s potential fate hits the fan, there may be a huge political battle as to how and why we got to this point in our planet’s history and what truths and lies will still be told. One that may determine if we even have a future. It’s beginning to look like this may happen before the 2024 elections and be an issue to many voters.
In closing . . .
A few words from Jim Morrison, troubled head of the Doors and not know as a ecological activist, from his prophetic When the Music’s Over released in 1967 on their album “Strange Days.” Demonstrates how long the mainstream had been ignoring the problem.
What have they done to the earth?
What have they done to our fair sister?
Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her
Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn
And tied her with fences and dragged her down
I hear a very gentle sound
With your ear down to the ground
We want the world and we want it...
We want the world and we want it...
Now
Now?
Now!
(loud screaming)
Persian night, babe
See the light, babe
Save us!
Climate change is finally hitting home in the U.S. mainstream media
