TBH I’m mostly asking out of curiosity, since I don’t know if I could do major changes like that anytime soon. That would be a huge job, and it already takes a solid year just to individually check every group in every index to keep the whole collection reasonably up to date as to which groups are active and which aren’t.
And to add new groups found additionally, e.g., via the NewDKGroups posts. And I’m working on a third big index/directory with working title, “Elebenty-dozen DK Groups&Series 2011-2023 That Aren't in the Other Indexes.”
The existing big ones are:
■ Where the DailyKOsGroups Are: Links to DK’s 290+ Local, IRL, Political & Geographic Groups, by State & Beyond, 2011-2023 ■ which includes
Section 1. General & National community, policy, cultural-area & political groups (aside from the 🔵 50+ 2016-2024 DK Presidential Candidate & Election Groups & Links to Reach Them which are in that separated index).
Section 2. Local, regional, & state kosak grps, local & state candidate/campaign grps, and no-vote-delegate territories/ possessions/ districts….
Section 3. International/Other Localities — non-U.S. places where kosaks live &/or are interested in. (Note: altho’ Kossacks on Mars is a dk group, it’s not listed here, nor similar. ...not yet, anyway. ;-)
and ■ DK’s 230+ Health/Med, Environment/Climate, Rights, Cause/Movement, Heritage/Identity etc & Friendly Open Thread Groups & Series, 2011-2023 ■ which includes:
■ LIST 1 (pale blue background), 65 or so groups & series focused on specific health or medical concerns, whether personal, communal, political, or all that’n’more.
|
.
■ LIST 2 (usual bkgrnd), 145 or so groups & series that may include health issues on individual, community, society, or planet level, such as on political or demographic/identity basis —e.g., environment, poverty, homelessness, hunger, guns, food, minorities/heritages (e.g., Black Kos, LatinoKos, NAN, AsianAmericans etc), genders, veterans, causes/movements etc, also helping-groups, pets, humor & related, because they’re health assets.
|
.
■ LIST 3(pale beige) [a] 25 or so friendly Open Thread groups & series, because friendship is good for health, and [b] with heritage, faith-based, spiritually oriented, religious freedom, and atheist groups/series not listed earlier (i.e., Black Kos, America Latina, Adalah, and many others are in List 2 because ethnicity is a factor in health, as to heritable risks and as to barriers to getting effective safe medical care, and so on).

The small ones are:
The in-process “Elebenty-dozen DK Groups 2011-2023 that aren't in the other DK Grps indexes” is gonna be, obviously, another humongous one, since I always list inactive groups as well as active ones. It’s history! Besides, many inactive groups still have members active in DK itself, which offers the chance of reviving a group like that, or forming a new one if revival technically isn’t possible.
... if I can ever get it done. Based on the original research begun in 2012, plus findings since, there are some few hundred more DK groups out there just waiting to be listed! Proposed sections so far include:
- ANTHROPOLOGY, CLASS, ECON, HISTORY, POLITICS, SOCIOLOGY, WAR, & related
- ARTS, CRAFTS, DO-THINGS, FIX THINGS, FILM, GAMES, SPORTS, TELEVISION, THEATER, & related
- COMMUNICATION[S], EDUCATION, LANGUAGE, LIBRARIES, LINGUISTICS, LITERATURE, PUBLISHING, WRITING…
- ENVIRONMENT, SciTechEngin’gMath, RELATED
- GROUPS THAT DON’T FIT ANY OF THE ABOVE SECTIONS. :)
If you’d like to know in which existing index/directory there might be groups for specific things you’re interested in, ask in the comments. Even if what you’re looking for isn’t in any of those yet, other commenters and I might be able to tell you if there are groups for that around already and how to reach them.
To add new members, a group has to have at least one active admin. Some groups don’t but can be active as a whole because they do have editors who are still personally active on site and can reblog appropriate diaries they find and others that authors or fans tell them about. (By kosmail — don’t forget to include the diary’s URL!)
Many groups never get off the ground, and others crash and burn on take-off because the kosaks who created them don’t have admin skills for running the group and don’t know to reach out around the community to promote their new group (e.g., at Open Thread diaries) and let people know new members are welcome. IOW, it does usually take work.
So, having several admins and editors with current group skills is a huge asset. To become them, look around to find existing groups that share some of your interests, ask to join and be mentored a little bit so you can help with the responsibilities and tasks, and take the initiative to learn stuff at tutorials of dk5How-To. and from the meta groups (listed in index for that a few paragraphs above). Not all groups need more members at leadership level, of course, but most would be happy to have more kosaks writimg diaries for the group. That’s how to start making a contribution right away, and show you can be of value there.
