(Do we agree on what a ‘pie fight’ is? I’ll use this as a definition: a diary that is clearly going to prompt conflicting reactions, and thereafter conflicting defenses, and thereafter…)
And that is perhaps why they bore me.
Nobody will change their mind because of the argument and claims made in the posts. People will get angry, certainly. Some people will get worked up enough to post their own responses.
But the supposed targets of the pie fight—the people who don’t visit DailyKos, who are in many cases racist, sexist, and even violent—don’t have any of that venom come near them. It’s all an internal thing.
It’s not helpful to guess at the motives of other people. But before I posted something I thought would become a pie fight, I would double-check my own motives: am I reassuring myself of my own purity? Am I justifying my inaction elsewhere?
To finish the thought in the title: they bore me because they are predictable, have no story line, and drag much longer than the average attention span.
