Earlier this year, the Iowa Supreme Court deadlocked 3-3 on Iowa’s 2018 law that banned abortion after 6 weeks. This had the effect of making abortion legal in Iowa. One justice recused because of ties to the lawsuit.
Yesterday, IA Gov. Reynolds called a special session for July 11. The only issue will be an abortion ban. Iowa has turned from a purple and occasional blue state to a solid red state over the past 20 years. R’s control the statehouse with large majorities. Plus, the D’s in the Iowa Senate had some issues at the end of session, so they have a “new” leader in Sen. Pam Jochum. Jochum has spent a long time in the Iowa legislature, and she should be up to the challenge. www.senate.iowa.gov/…
Iowans favor reproductive freedom. However, everyone expects the bill to be run through with limited debate and little or not time for amendments. According to “The Des Moines Register,” the top paper in Iowa, 61% of Iowans think abortion should be legal in most or all circumstances, with only 35% think abortion should be illegal in most or all cases. Democrats are asking Iowans to contact their legislators and demand reproductive freedom.
