The good people of Romancelandia are raising money for relief in Maui. The money is going to local groups, who will help out local people. A list of beneficiaries from their web page:
About Romance for Maui
Bidding has started, they’ve already raised the goal because they shot past the 1st one in a matter of hours, I expect they’ll change it again because they’ve passed the 2nd goal as well. Sadly 2 things I really wanted are already far, far outside my range. There are so many awesome things like a worldbuilding class from author Beverly Jenkins, complete sets of books by all kinds of great authors, custom cover packages for when your book is written, editing services and book critiques, jewelry and hand-knit items…. Just so much great stuff. It ends on the 21st, and items will be added probably right up till then, because they were on previous auctions (Romancing the Runoff and Mystery Loves Georgia raised a ton of money for the runoffs). Even if you’re not a Romance person, there’s stuff in this auction for any book lover, and really valuable stuff for writers of any kind of fiction. I will not cry because someone else is getting the complete set of Tessa Dare’s books. (I’m actually really proud for her — the set of her books is going for over $900). Also, if someone I know gets tea and a zoom call with Courtney Milan — please, please tell me about it.
So what are you reading? I’m still on a re-read of Sarah MacLean, 3rd book in a series coming soon. I didn’t read them in order the first time, so while catching up before the new one, I wanted to read them in order. They are fun, steamy historical romance. The latest trilogy is women in Victorian London who….fix things. Abusive men have unfortunate accidents, that sort of thing. I think of them as a Victorian version of Leverage. And I’m reading Starstruck by Sarafina El-Badry Nance, an astrophysicist who grew up in Austin. She’s young, but has already had a very interesting life. When she found out she has the BRCA gene, and an incredibly high chance of breast cancer, she had a preventative double mastectomy her 1st semester in grad school — and she had to fight to find doctors who would do it. She’s hoping to be on the Artemis II team, the one that lands on the Moon.
Or do you have something in Book World that you want to talk about?
