I get requests for donations to this site fairly frequently and would be happy to slide money Kos’ way since I’ve thoroughly enjoyed both the community and the excellent news coverage. I got a perpetual subscription and have also passed out a few, but times change just as much as Kos has over the last 20 years. Right here, right now, Kos is battling a populist candidate (who shall remain nameless) over a story that exposed his increasing descent into the margins of right-wing conspiracy culture. This person has deep pockets and is willing to nail both Kos himself and the community in general to the wall to satisfy his own ego.
My request is this: that a fundraiser be set up specifically to cover the costs of that lawsuit, and that the fundraiser not be associated with ActBlue, a worthy fundraising platform, but only available to US citizens. It requires a passport number for expats, which is absolutely necessary when contributing to candidates for US public office. However, while this site is an excellent place for candidates to fundraise, it is not a candidate itself.
Some of us come here from abroad, some from the country where the candidate himself was stirring up trouble alongside their own extreme right wing personalities. Perhaps they would be willing to contribute to this very worthy cause.
As a side whine, I am a US citizen myself but have had problems with ActBlue, I have contributed to candidates easily but for some reason trying to contribute here inevitably fails. I can’t do a monthly donation, but sometimes income vs. outgo is such that I can do a one-off every few months and would be happy to do so. This forum has been a neccessary part of my daily news intake for a long time and I don’t want to see a particularly dodgy character take it down.
