Biden needs a lot more credit for the US crime rate under his presidency.
Most people think the U.S. crime rate is rising. They're wrong.
Almost 80 percent of Americans, and 92 percent of Republicans, think crime has gone up. It actually fell in 2023.
Crime in the United States has declined significantly over the last year, according to new FBI data that contradicts a widespread national perception that law-breaking and violence are on the rise.
The FBI data, which compares crime rates in the third quarter of 2023 to the same period last year, found that violent crime dropped 8%, while property crime fell 6.3% to what would be its lowest level since 1961, according to criminologist Jeff Asher, who analyzed the FBI numbers.
Murder plummeted in the United States in 2023 at one of the fastest rates of decline ever recorded, Asher found, and every category of major crime except auto theft declined.
In fact, the decrease in murder rates in 2023 was record setting!
Homicides See Historic Decline In 2023 Despite Perceptions That Crime Is On The Rise
the U.S. is poised to finish the year with a historic drop in homicides and drops in other crime categories, a finding that conflicts with public perceptions that crime is on the rise, according to a recent analysis of criminal justice data.
Murders are down 12.8% over last year across more than 175 cities, according to criminal justice data analyzed by firm AH Analytics, with AH Analytics co-founder and data analyst Jeff Asher recently writing on Substack that the data suggests that U.S. murders are on pace to log “one of the fastest rates of decline ever recorded” this year.
Major cities, which some commentators have in recent years portrayed as overrun by crime, have seen significant declines in homicides, including double-digit declines in New York (11.42% as of Dec. 24), Los Angeles (15.45% as of Dec. 23) and Chicago (12.7% as of Dec. 27), per the AH Analytics murder dashboard, drawing from local law enforcement data across the country.
That is right, those cities, that Republicans and Fox news try to freak people out about, are actually doing better and better. For example:
Chicago police 2023 crime data shows decline in murders, shootings
-- The Chicago Police Department released its end of the year crime stats for 2023, showing a drop in in the number of murders and shootings.
Is this just a one year blip? Nope. If we look back to last year
Killings and violent crime fell in 2022, FBI says
Homicides and violent crime overall decreased in the United States in 2022, according to FBI data
murder and manslaughter both fell by 6.1 percent in 2022, and the violent crime rate nationwide declined 1.7 percent, according to the FBI.
How did Biden contribute to this? Well, one way was adequately funding law enforcement and the second was increasing job opportunities and help for the poorest Americans.
Is there still more work to be done? 100%! Lots more work. But Biden did more than many people guessed could be done. And he deserves a lot of credit. AND he deserves to be re-elected.
What can you do to help?
