Two weeks from today will be the special election to replace serial fabulist George Anthony Devolder Santos in NY-03. I did not expect to get called to work since I live in NY-04 which is located entirely within soutwestern Nassau County whereas NY-03 runs mostly along the North Shore of Long Island and Queens. There is a bit of the district that extends down towards the South Shore in eastern Nassau County around Massapequa. Unfortunately, my mother was called by the Board of Elections asking if we wanted to work the special election. I guess either the BOE is still short workers or a number of people who usually would work cannot due to the fact that it is not a normal election date and decided to call poll workers who work in other districts to supplant the workers who do.
Without consulting me, my mother agreed to have us work the special election. I do enjoy being a poll worker, but in NY, it is a long, long day. We have to arrive at our polling locations at 5:15am to ensure we can open the polls at 6. Voting ends at 9pm and it takes roughly 30-40 minutes to close the polls. That is unless we still have voters in line or in the polling place at 9 and have to keep the polls open. We are required to work the entire day but we do get two one hour meal breaks. For all this work, we get paid $240 not exactly as king’s ransom.
As I stated above, we live in southwest Nassau. The three locations my mom was given as places that needed additional workers are all in northern or northeast Nassau. The closest location is 30 minutes from us in good traffic the other two locations are both 40 minutes away. Obviously, we got assigned to the location the farthest from us. Because of this, we will have to wake up at 3am so we can leave by 4 to ensure we are at our location by 5:15. I am not expecting to experience traffic at 4am considering we will be traveling in the opposite direction most commuters travel, but one never knows on Long Island. It will be close to 11pm when we finally arrive home. If I liked Valentine’s Day at all, I would be the worst date the next day.
Oh and this means I will be unable to write my weekly diary that week. Here’s to democracy!
