The Biden administration is working hard to keep America strong into the next decades. Part of this involved training American workers for modern jobs.
The administration stared a new advanced manufacturing workforce program and five workforce hubs, which help create pathways leading to jobs in manufacturing sectors.
White House launches manufacturing workforce programs
private companies had announced over $470 billion in clean energy, EVs, batteries, semiconductors and biomanufacturing projects since Biden took office.
Now, the administration is focusing its efforts on building up a workforce to support the burgeoning manufacturing industry. This includes working with labor unions, workforce development organizations and companies to expand pre- and registered apprenticeships and technical education at all levels.
Additionally, the administration will work to create “workforce hubs” in Phoenix, Arizona; Columbus, Ohio; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Baltimore, Maryland; and Augusta, Georgia, focusing on career development in the sectors that have emerged in those regions.
For example, Phoenix will focus on job development within semiconductor manufacturing. Contract manufacturer Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. currently has two fabrication facilities under construction and is expected to create over 4,500 jobs in the Phoenix area.
“That’s the Biden education pathway,” First Lady Jill Biden said in her remarks at the Department of Labor’s Investing in America’s Workforce Convening on Tuesday. “It starts with free, high-quality universal preschool and creates a high school experience that prepares students for their next steps. It provides two years of affordable community college and opens up avenues to a four-year degree for those who want one.”
Some info on one of the hubs → Biden administration launches Baltimore 'Workforce Hub' with $5M Amtrak investment
The funds, provided through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, are part of a broader federal strategy to fill high-tech manufacturing positions and big-budget infrastructure jobs created under President Joe Biden's legislative agenda.
The investment in Baltimore is intended to support community-based partnerships with unions and local trade organizations to prepare prospective employees for career-level jobs, while extending child care and transportation benefits to enrollees so they can attend training worry-free.
The funds will also be used to implement career and technical education in Baltimore City Public Schools, and create a job center that will engage with people from disadvantaged communities to recruit new workers for future transit projects in the region.
and another one → Columbus named one of nation's Workforce Hubs for engineering
Columbus is one of five cities to be named a “Workforce Hub.” The other cities include Augusta, Ga; Pittsburgh; Boston and Phoenix. Because of big investments like Intel, the Columbus hub’s primary goal is to create a pipeline for a range of skilled jobs.
An announcement from the White House indicates these efforts will include:
- A partnership with Columbus State Community College to quadruple the number of students trained in engineering technology over the next five years
- A Columbus State partnership with Intel to launch a new certificate program for semiconductor technicians
- A plan to train at least 10,000 skilled construction trades ranging from plumbers to roofers to iron workers
This is a smart investment for now and for the future. Too often, Presidents just think about what looks good now, without thinking about the future. Biden is focusing on the now AND on the future. It is what makes him a great president.
Is there still more work to be done? 100%! Lots more work. But Biden did more than many people guessed could be done. And he deserves a lot of credit. AND he deserves to be re-elected.
