Came across this story in the Washington Post today. It’s behind a paywall although sometimes you can get access with your phone.
The gist is immigration is a boon to our economy.
Last week, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released updated 10-year economic and budget forecasts. The numbers look significantly better than they did a year earlier, and immigration is a key reason.
These immigrants are more likely to work than their native-born counterparts, largely because immigrants skew younger. This infusion of working-age immigrants will more than offset the expected retirement of the aging, native-born population.
As a result of these immigration-driven revisions to the size of the labor force, “we [CBO] estimate that, from 2023 to 2034, GDP will be greater by about $7 trillion and revenues will be greater by about $1 trillion than they would have been otherwise.”
My emphasis.
It was noted that immigrants have high entrepreneurship rates and contributions to science, research and innovation. Of course we have GOP troglodytes who don’t quite see it that way. Rep Collins (Clown-GA) recently said, “Import the 3rd world, become the 3rd world.”
Going forward, a question for Dems will be how to tout the benefits of immigration while simultaneously advocating the need to address “poorly managed flows” of migrants.
