I was active on Twitter/X for many years. Five or six weeks ago I deleted my account. Just couldn’t support Putin Propagandist MAGA Elmo Fucking Musk anymore. He ruined the experience for me anyway.
Truth is I miss it. It feels like I just ended some good friendships, because I sort of did. But I’m not going back.
I stopped frequenting Daily Kos during my Twitter years because I got the content from my favorite staff writers (Joan McCarter, Mark Sumner, David Nir, Hunter, Meteor Blades, et al) from their Twitter posts, which I frequently reposted. Some of them even followed me. (But not Joan, despite all the sycophancy and praise and promoting her work—hell I even bought her a beer two or three times—not that I’m bitter; do I sound bitter? She’s still the Queen Mother of liberal political blogging and I’m back to read and rec all her fine work and continue sucking up.)
I was surprised that after years of being almost entirely absent from this site I still had my five bars of mojo. That felt good. Not having the distraction of constant Twitter notifications (I know I could turn them off, yet somehow I couldn’t) has been wonderful. I realize I’m retreating into a leftist echo chamber, but I just couldn’t take any more of the MAGA nonsense that was being shoved in my face on “X”.
All things considered I’m very happy with my decision. The staff writing and community contributions here are still superb. Im reading more. Like actual books. And for some reason I sleep better. It feels like I’m home. Thank you for keeping the light on for me.
By the way, where’s Hunter?
