Last week I published a diary highlighting the seriously diminishing returns in the gofundme that was created by Elena Cardone in order to pay for tRump’s huge fine by New York state. It was fun enjoying the seriously diminishing returns. Days in which the numbers were less than one thousand.
At this point, however, we see something different. A sad number of people are supporting him, because, as it has been reported widely, tRump has not been able to post the bond. The numbers have gone up substantially.
But don’t despair! Remember, he was apparently turned down by banks and surety companies (note we may not have confirmation on this, and this is sourced through tRump people, which we know are not reliable). And apparently no sugar daddy billionaire has yet ponied up (still possible).
Let’s look at the numbers:

And this morning it’s over 1,500,000, but I try to collect data at about the same time each day.
Many of these people supported tRump because he claimed to be a billionaire; now they’re supporting him because he’s broke. Ah, the cognitive dissonance! And, we can presume that some of the money that would be going to the other GOP candidates will not go that way.
So, all better for tRump or does he still need to worry? 1.5/355 is about 0.42% of the amount this gofundme is trying to collect. Also, the 355 is without the initial interest and amounts for other offenders in the tRump organization. The other bit brings it to 464, or they have collected 1.5/464, or about 0.32% of the total required. They still have a long ways to go, you know, well more than 99% of the way.
Other sources of funds have not been forthcoming. Although tRump got a bond for the E. Jean Carroll defamation award, he has not yet gotten one for this large amount. Apparently Chubb got enough pushback from the press and investors that they declined to underwrite the larger bond. And apparently tRump has been turned down by something like 30 others, although the source is the tRump side of things, and we don’t trust them. Maybe the financial markets don’t trust him and his organization either; after all, they were found liable for fraud. tRump would make it hard to collect.
So the donor class has soured on tRump. And although some billionaires will certainly support tRump, they didn’t donate for the NY State case (at least not yet).
Comparison to President Biden? Well, one can’t compare precisely because the situations are not the same (and we don't trust tRump and the tRump campaign, so we doubt the numbers), but here’s a report on the Biden recent cash haul. Colleen Long, Associated Press
“The enthusiasm we’re picking up as we go around the country is real,” Biden said in a radio interview with WNOV 860 in Wisconsin last week. “We’ve raised a whole lot of money. We have 1.5 million donors, including 500,000 are brand new, they’re small donors; 97% of the donations under $200.”
That gofundme currently lists 26K donations. 26,000 is much, much fewer than 1.5 million donors. A sign of much less enthusiasm. Also, I expect many of the 26K are repeats, and I expect others are ringers, especially when they were signing their donation names with phrases like “Black Guy for Trump.”
Also, President Biden has some wealthy donors in his corner too. Outside groups pledge 1 billion to Biden as tRump reportedly struggles to fundraise Alison Durkee, Forbes
The League of Conservation Voters, a climate-focused group, pledged to donate $120 million to Biden’s reelection, the Times reports, putting the fundraising haul by outside groups over the $1 billion mark.
The biggest groups spending money on Biden’s reelection are super PAC Future Forward, the Service Employees International Union and research organization American Bridge, according to the Times, which have pledged between $140 million and $250 million on advertising and other campaign help.
There’s also this:
We still have a huge fight on our hands. tRump is in danger of losing his liberty and his assets, so they are desperate. Also, he and his allies do not obey the rules. But we have many advantages. Report at the end of Feb: Biden campaign had 155 million in cash, while the tRump campaign had about 36 million. And tRump has legal bills!
Push on! We need to win this.
Also, let me know if you want me to keep following the gofundme.
🐦 I do a lot of other writing. A recent offering: the Crow Nickels (chronicles), a trilogy about crows who want to save birdkind from extinction: Hunters of the Feather, Scavengers of Mind and Familiars of the Flock (They’re really good! They’re really cheap! Buy and review or rate positively! And Hunters is also available on Audible!) Other stories, based on Jane Austen novels — such as The Meryton Murders — and others based on history and Greek mythology, such as Jocasta: The Mother-Wife of Oedipus, can be found here. All titles are available through Kindle Unlimited, but I only get paid if you turn the pages.
