Welcome 🌻 to Friday’s Roundup of Good News!
This week, the equinox means the northern hemisphere is now getting more light than dark. It’s a good moment to recall a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
Love is also not afraid. Well, not never afraid, but I think those who embrace truth and love are much braver than those who cling to lies and hatred. We are not afraid to fight for what we know is right.
We’re also told, over and over, that bringing these people to the light is impossible. But that is not always true. If it were true, then we would not be seeing the defections. Now, we can’t expect to convert them all, but we should remember that many are in silos where they really don’t know the truth. If you know any, shine some light for them. Others may not be that bright. Don’t insult them; help them; take their concerns seriously. Even if you feel you’re not making a difference — even if you don’t get the gratification of instant conversion — you are probably making a difference.
Once they step a little bit away, admitting the rest becomes much easier, sometimes even a big relief.
So, enjoy the spring with its increasing light, and let your lights shine!
Come on in, dear gnusies, and see what some of our shining lights are doing!
Regular Scheduled Programming
No one here is naïve; we are aware of the many who are fighting to destroy our country. Some of us expected it: the cheating, the lying, the chaos, and yes, even the attempts to cling to power despite the clear will of the people. But we are here to read the efforts and the positive results of those (including us and our fellow gnus) who are working so hard to save our country from those very bad people. We are furious with them for what they are doing and we are letting them know. Remember:
💙 There are more of us than there are of them.
💛 They are terrified when we organize. THERE IS LOTS OF EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE TERRIFIED!
💔 They want us to be demoralized. The best way to keep up your spirits is to fight. So, take the time to recharge your batteries, but find ways to contribute to the well-being of our country and our world.

Russians at noon against putin in most recent election Guy Falcounbridge and Andrew Osborn Reuters
MOSCOW, March 17 (Reuters) - Thousands of people turned up at polling stations in Russia and capitals across the world on Sunday to take part in what the anti-Kremlin opposition said was a peaceful but symbolic protest against the re-election of President Vladimir Putin.
In an action called "noon against Putin", Russians who oppose the veteran Kremlin leader went to their local polling station at midday to either spoil their ballot paper or to vote for one of the three candidates standing against Putin, who is widely expected to win by a landslide.
putin did win, of course, because it’s who counts the votes and not the votes that count. But many Russians want something else and we should not forget it — and we should not forget their bravery.
👎 🎩 T Ruth Bader Ginsburg award ceremony canceled after family objects to selected honorees Maura Judkis Washington Post
An award given in the name of Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been abruptly canceled after the family of the late Supreme Court justice and others objected that this year’s slate of recipients do not reflect her values.
The Dwight D. Opperman Foundation last week announced that it would award the prize to Elon Musk, Martha Stewart, Rupert Murdoch, Michael Milken and Sylvester Stallone. Critics couldn’t help but observe that these “five iconic individuals” — as the awards news release described them — included among them convicted felons and conservative billionaires who own right-wing media enterprises. ✂️
Ginsburg was longtime friends with Dwight Opperman, who served as president of West Publishing Co., which created the online research service Westlaw. He and Julie Opperman married in 2008. He died in 2013.
“Neither of his two sons nor any other biological relative is involved with the Dwight D. Opperman Foundation,” Vance Opperman, the son of Dwight Opperman and his first wife Jeanice, told The Post. He added that none of his biological family is in touch with Julie Opperman and that they were “unhappy to have their names associated with this.”
💣 Republicans: Party of Crimes and Chaos 💣
The RNC is prioritizing tRump’s legal bills Michelle L Price, Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump’s new joint fundraising agreement with the Republican National Committee directs donations to his campaign and a political action committee that pays the former president’s legal bills before the RNC gets a cut, according to a fundraising invitation obtained by The Associated Press.
The unorthodox diversion of funds to the Save America PAC makes it more likely that Republican donors could see their money go to Trump’s lawyers, who have received at least $76 million over the last two years to defend him against four felony indictments and multiple civil cases. Some Republicans are already troubled that Trump’s takeover of the RNC could shortchange the cash-strapped party.
Too bad! Yeah, I’m snickering in my armchair too. The face-eating leopards are here, guys!
The “let’s impeach President Biden for something” hearings are not going well. The Ds invited Lev Parnas, the former ally of Giuliani, to speak. Wow. Lev Parnas just obliterated Republicans, saying, “The only information ever pushed on the Bidens in Ukraine has come from one source only: Russia & Russian agents. The impeachment proceedings that bring us here now are predicted [sic] on false information from the Kremlin.”
tRump is not consolidating the vote.
tRump’s PAC burned $230,000 a day on legal bills in February Roger Sollenberger and Reese Gorman, The Daily Beast
In the month of February, Donald Trump finally neared the start of his general election campaign against Joe Biden—while burning through his political operation’s coffers for even more cash to support his legal defenses.
On Wednesday night, Trump’s “Save America” leadership PAC—the political committee that now functions primarily as his legal slush fund—reported paying lawyers $5.6 million last month, according to Federal Election Commission filings. That’s well above the $5 million total the PAC raised in the same period.
The PAC also deferred payment on more than half a million dollars in additional fees to Alina Habba, who represented Trump in both of his milestone court losses in New York this year, while racking up a $645,000 bill to a company tasked with managing legal records in his business fraud case.

Great Biden-Harris fundraising Colleen Long, Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden’s campaign has amassed $155 million in cash on hand for the 2024 election, far exceeding the in-hand total for his Republican opponent, Donald Trump.
The president raised $53 million alone last month, which was the strongest grassroots fundraising month since the campaign launched, according to campaign officials. Among those efforts was a contest for supporters to attend a fundraiser on March 28 in New York with Biden, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton that raised $4 million last month.
“The enthusiasm we’re picking up as we go around the country is real,” Biden said in a radio interview with WNOV 860 in Wisconsin last week. “We’ve raised a whole lot of money. We have 1.5 million donors, including 500,000 are brand new, they’re small donors; 97% of the donations under $200.”
Heard on Morning Joe on 3/21 (I listen to it because of timing and because, although I disagree with Scarborough a lot, he lets me know how people are thinking): those arranging fundraisers for Biden are having a much better time of it than usual. People WANT to fundraise for Biden.
Biden endorsed by steelworkers: President Biden has just been endorsed by the United Steelworkers, which represents over 850,000 workers. This is an endorsement Trump was trying to get. President Biden is the most pro-union & pro-worker president in modern history & this is really good news.
Huge decrease in crime White House Briefing Room
Across America, families want the same thing: the freedom to feel safe in their community. To know their kids are secure. My Administration is making it a reality. This week, the FBI released data showing that crime declined across nearly every category in 2023. Last year, we also had one of the lowest rates of all violent crime in more than 50 years and the murder rate saw the sharpest decrease in history. That’s good news for the American people.
In 2020, before I took office, the prior administration oversaw the largest increase in murders ever recorded. My Administration got to work on day one to fix that. Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, which every Republican in Congress voted against, we made the largest-ever federal investment in fighting and preventing crime at any time in our history. That enabled cities and states to invest $15 billion in public safety. This record investment in crime reduction – in community violence intervention, mental health and additional officers – is delivering results. It is keeping law enforcement on the beat, and keeping communities safe from violence. My Administration is also taking on the crisis of gun violence head on, with more executive actions on gun violence than any President in history and signing the most significant law to address gun violence in almost 30 years.
Keeping communities safe is my priority. While we’ve made major progress, we still have more work to do. That’s why I’ll keep fighting to make more investments in preventing crime, to fund additional accountable police officers to ensure trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve, and to ban assault weapons to keep guns out of dangerous hands – and I will continue to urge Republicans in Congress to join me.
💜 Unity? 💜
Wonder why the stock market has been soaring? It’s partly because the Fed signalled it would continue to cut interest rates this year. Victoria Guida, Politico
Federal Reserve officials expect to cut borrowing costs three times in 2024 but signaled Wednesday that interest rates won’t drop as aggressively over the next three years, in an endorsement of the strength of the U.S. economy.
The central bank held rates steady after meetings this week and released new quarterly economic projections showing that policymakers project that prices will rise 2.4 percent this year — just above their target of 2 percent inflation.
But they revised up their forecast for economic growth to 2.1 percent this year, a change from 1.4 percent in December, and penciled in fewer rate cuts for 2025. That suggests they expect the economy to comfortably withstand higher rates.
Note I was originally going to link to The New York Times, but the pieces was as anti-Biden and as despressing as a piece could be.
European Union pushes aheard with using profits from frozen Russian assets to buy weapons for Ukraine Lorne Cook Washington Post
BRUSSELS — The European Union is pressing ahead with a plan to use the profits generated from billions of euros of Russian assets frozen in Europe to help provide weapons and other funds for Ukraine, a senior official said Tuesday.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell got a green light for the plan from most of the bloc’s foreign ministers this week, and he hopes that EU leaders will endorse it at a summit in Brussels starting on Thursday. The move comes as Ukraine runs dangerously low on munitions, and U.S. efforts to get new funds for weapons have stalled in Congress.
The 27-nation EU is holding around 200 billion euros ($217 billion) in Russian central bank assets, most of it frozen in Belgium, in retaliation for Moscow’s war against Ukraine. The bloc estimates that the interest on that money could provide around 3 billion euros ($3.3 billion) each year.

🌱Grass roots. Biden and Harris can do the top-down stuff, but we have to support from the bottom. I don’t know how to deprogram 75 million people, but some things have been written about, such as deep canvassing, and lots of people are talking about this. If you know someone (who did not storm the Capitol), then see if you can be pleasant. Instead of trying to reason with them (logic is obviously not their strong point) distract them with something else. We need to remove the sources of lies and to take down the temperature. If we get more of the Rs to wear masks and to get vaccinated and to vote for Ds, the country will be a better place. We need to coax some of them out of the rabbit holes and diffuse the anger and the crazy.

tRump-Epstein billboards appearing in the South Kate Briquelet The Daily Beast
Residents of North Carolina began noticing the mysterious billboards days before this month’s Super Tuesday primaries.
Across Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Greensboro, and beyond, digital posters displaying the smiling faces of former President Donald Trump and his old friend, the notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, greeted drivers as they traveled highways and busy intersections.
Soon after, the Trump-Epstein signs popped up in
Georgia. “I live in this little tiny Trump town and there’s one person here that I want to be friends with,” said liberal Jeff Wagenius in a
TikTok documenting the enigma. He added, “Cuz this right here deserves the best beer we have in town on me, I swear to God.”
The digital billboards—rented through Lamar Advertising—show a 1990s image of Epstein and Trump at the GOP frontrunner’s
Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach,
Florida. The photo flashes on rotation among more mundane ads for things like pest control and realty firms.
The signs have no message, save for the line: “Paid for by ProtectChildrenQ LLC.”

Rittenhouse runs off stage after getting booed by protesters Amanda Yen The Daily Beast
Kyle Rittenhouse, who became a darling of the right after shooting three protesters in 2020, hightailed it off a stage at the University of Memphis on Wednesday night as a crowd of demonstrators booed him.
Video from the event showed several protesters in black T-shirts in attendance. One of them stood up and questioned Rittenhouse about Charlie Kirk, the far-right conservative activist whose youth organization, Turning Point U.S.A., sponsored Rittenhouse’s appearance.
Ex-tRump associate reports to prison April Rubin Axios
Former President Trump adviser Peter Navarro reported to prison in Miami on Tuesday to begin serving a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress.
Why it matters: Navarro is the first high-ranking Trump official to serve prison time over actions related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
- The Supreme Court on Monday rejected Navarro's bid to remain free while he appealed his conviction.
Another arrest: Pro-Trump lawyer Stefanie Lambert surrendered this morning to Michigan authorities in connection with her 2020 election tampering indictment, after a wild week in which she was labeled a fugitive and spent a night in jail after being arrested in DC.
Deaths of Russian soldiers in Russia Shannon Vavra The Daily Beast
Russia has allegedly lost 600 men in the attacks on its border regions in recent days, and the operation has hindered Vladimir Putin’s war efforts by keeping his troops distracted, according to Ukrainian intelligence.
The armed offensive—waged by three anti-Kremlin Russian militia groups earlier this month—has also left more than 800 Russians wounded, according Andrii Yusov, a representative of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense’s Main Intelligence Directorate. Speaking on a telethon Monday, Yusov added that 20 Russian armored vehicles and seven tanks have been damaged in the attacks, which he described as having caused “serious enemy losses.”
The militia groups—the Freedom of Russia Legion, the Russian Volunteer Corps, and the Siberian Battalion—have said that the intended goal of their campaign is to bring an end to the war on Ukraine. They also allegedly have damaged Russian ammunition warehouses, dugouts, towers with antennae, video surveillance, a cellular communication station, a bridge, and other fortifications.
Local Kremlin officials have alleged that the attacks only killed two Russians and injured 12, the AP reported. Moscow has also claimed that its forces killed over 400 enemy fighters and destroyed five tanks and four armored vehicles in the attacks.
Yeah, I don’t like deaths either, but these people are waging an unjust war.

Goodable had this Xweet about Caden Harris
But I didn’t think it was enough. Like, where? And if he’s only 13, who’s driving the bus? So here’s more from Shyanne Taylor, Upscale Magazine
Caden Harris, the 13-year-old phenom that is taking the business world by storm. Caden is the CEO and founder of Caden Teaches, an author, and a high-school graduate. He owns a Financial Bus and teaches financial literacy to other kids using kid-friendly financing skills and tools. His Financial Bus has been featured on Hulu’s hit tv series “Big RV Remix” and he has visited over 100 schools in just this year alone. “My biggest goal is to teach over 500,000 kids about financial literacy,” Caden emphasized. ✂️
At the age of 7-years-old Caden started up his own financial literacy business. One night while eating Chinese food for dinner Caden received an eye-opening fortune cookie that stated, “Something on 4 wheels will soon be a fun investment for you!” It was so surreal because Caden was already brainstorming a bus idea for his business idea. He still has this fortune cookie with him to this day.
Caden definitely worked extremely hard to achieve his accomplishments. Caden purchased the financial bus for $10,000 with his own hard earned money. He then took it upon himself to reach out to different companies to invest and raised $50,000 to transform the bus into a traveling mobile unit. The financial bus includes a mock bank, mock grocery store, and even learning stations which are included with tablets and TVs. “Students can learn how to deposit and withdraw money, how to invest, and how to create a proper budget,” Caden explains.
Maybe you still have questions. Georgia is where he lives. I don’t know who’s driving. But what he’s doing is so important. The kids are all right.

Volunteers plant 1 million or so moss cuttings to restore bog and improve water quality in England Andy Corbley Good News Network
After deciding in 2012 that the Dovestone Reservoir needed serious restoration, volunteers have spent the last decade hand-planting cuttings of moss to improve water quality and filtration.
The hilltop reservoir in Oldham, in Manchester county, was surrounded by bare peat bogs, over which rainwater would fall rapidly and take on a silty brown color. This water then moved into the surrounding streams and gullies and further degraded the riverine qualities. ✂️
To remedy this, volunteers with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, together with United Utilities which owns the land, have worked rain, wind, and sunshine (but mostly rain and wind) for 10 years planting sphagnum moss all around the area which has been experiencing de-vegetation since Neolithic times.
On a rainy, windy Wednesday, the volunteers celebrated planting their one-millionth cutting.
