Millions of Americans deal with hearing loss, which affects all aspects of their lives. Many of them don’t get hearing aids because of the unbelievable price tag.
Joe Biden is changing that.
Cheaper Hearing Aids Now in Stores Thanks to Biden-Harris Administration Competition Agenda
To lower the price of hearing aids and expand access, President Biden’s Executive Order on Promoting Competition in the American Economy called on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to make hearing aids available over the counter, without a prescription. That is now reality. Hearing aids are now on store shelves across the country—for thousands of dollars less than they previously cost.
This new rule should make a huge difference to this country. According to Slate, about 30 million Americans over age 12 have some hearing loss in both ears — yet only 20 percent of the deaf and hard of hearing use hearing aids.
One reason is that Medicare and most insurance providers won't cover them, considering them "elective” items. As Slate comments:
This lack of coverage is both questionable and infuriating, considering that hearing loss can be a cause of depression and predictor of severe health conditions like dementia.
The OTC aids aren't appropriate for people with severe hearing loss. But they should be a great help to many who have mild to moderate problems.
Is there still more work to be done? 100%! Lots more work. But Biden did more than many people guessed could be done. He deserves a lot of credit. AND he deserves to be re-elected.
