This is why I started going to church: for the joy of singing. I’ve now spent almost 25 years singing in the choir since my then-wife persuaded me to join.
On Sunday we sang a Mozart mass — most of it, anyway. Each part of the mass was sung in its proper place in our service, so, because it’s the season of Lent, we did not sing the Gloria.
At our church, it’s our custom that the third or fourth Sunday in Lent is Special Music Sunday; we present something more than the usual hymns and anthems. On this occasion we had a string trio and a guest organist, with our music director conducting, and we were all crammed into the choir loft, which is why se sound a bit off mic. While all our services are on Youtube, they’re really meant to be attended in person. The camera does not do justice to our two century old church building and its traditional New England box pews, for one thing.
We are an Episcopal church, but our music comes from a variety of Christian traditions (less than a month ago we sang a Zulu anthem, and in a couple weeks we’ll be singing one in French). Mozart was a Catholic, and his text is the traditional Latin (Tridentine) mass.
