The Biden administration has used many many tools to help the planet. One of them is new standards to address climate-warming emissions from cars and light trucks.
For example, the Washington Post reported in December 2021 that Biden’s new emission rules would help undo some of the damage caused by his predecessor’s policies.
New Biden rule reducing climate emissions from cars and SUVs reverses major Trump rollback
The Environmental Protection Agency regulation finalized Monday marks the president’s single biggest step to fight global warming.
The Biden administration finalized a rule Monday to cut climate pollutants from new cars and light trucks, which will keep billions of tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere and change the kinds of vehicles Americans drive.
The standards for model years 2023 to 2026, signed Monday morning by EPA Administrator Michael Regan, require that cars, SUVs and pickup trucks release an average of 161 grams of carbon dioxide per mile by 2026. The new Biden standards are equivalent to an average of roughly 55 miles per gallon by 2026 in laboratory testing. The average figure appearing on window stickers — and advertised EPA mileage — would be 40 mpg.
Two years later, Biden moved to tighten the rules further, as discussed by Al Jazeera:
Biden administration announces sweeping car emissions proposal
The administration of President Joe Biden has proposed new automobile emissions standards that could result in about two thirds of all new vehicles sold in the United States being electric by 2032, in an ambitious bid to reduce emissions and air pollution.
The proposed rules were announced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Wednesday, with the federal agency stating that the standards would result in a reduction of about 10 billion tonnes of carbon emissions by 2055, the equivalent of about two times the country’s total emissions in 2022.
The EPA stated that the proposed rules would reduce US oil imports by about 20 billion barrels and save consumers about $12,000 over the lifetime of a light-duty vehicle.
The EPA’s final rule is expected in early spring 2024.
Is there still more work to be done? 100%! Lots more work. But Biden did more than many people guessed could be done. He deserves a lot of credit. AND he deserves to be re-elected.
