Oh, where to begin. Richard Penniman is known as the Architect of Rock and Roll for a reason. His rapid fire piano playing, his throaty vocals and his distinctive, pounding back beat took music from its boogie-woogie, gospel and R&B roots and planted it firmly into the burgeoning rock genre. He influenced so many huge names in his seven decade career that I dare not even try to count them all. All this from a flamboyantly gay Black man out of the Deep South.
