Here we go again, with our weekly revisit to the topic of staying prepared for life, often called prepping.
Here is the link to the ready kit:
www.ready.gov/…
- Water (one gallon per person per day for several days, for drinking and sanitation)
- Food (at least a several-day supply of non-perishable food)
- Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
- Flashlight
- First aid kit
- Extra batteries
- Whistle (to signal for help)
- Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air)
- Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place)
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
- Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)
- Manual can opener (for food)
- Local maps
- Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery
That website, and many folks here at Daily Kos, think mainly of disasters, when they see the word “prepping.”
And, of course, we all need to keep disasters in mind.
But another benefit of stocking up on things, is that I simply will not need to go to the store to buy any more of these items, for 2 to 5 years.
Just a few hours ago, I recorded a nice video about some of these items I have in my home:
Ignore the first part of the video.
It is about setting the correct date in the upper left corner.
In fixing the date, I ended up removing it.
Ha!
Here is a list of items I talked about in the video, and a few I forgot to mention:
- Water
- Food
- Clothing
- Shampoo/Body Wash
- Wiping Behinds Off Supplies
- Cotton washcloths
- Laundry soap
- Dish soap
- Bath towels
- Petroleum jelly
- Toothpaste
- Razor blades and shaving cream
- First aid supplies
- Batteries
- Gatorade powder
- Coffee and tea bags
Many of those items, notably water, I do not have a 2-to-5-year supply of.
My supply of Gatorade powder may last me a year, and my coffee may last me a few months.
I encourage you to consider the way I live my life, with regards to the Wiping Off Behinds Supplies.
Watch the video and think about it.
And the laundry soap ideas have me feeling good, thinking I may not need to buy any more laundry soap for at least five years.
We will see.
Well, feel free to post your ideas in the comments.
Tell us what you have plenty of on hand.
And tell us if this diary gave you any ideas that may help you.
And post comments that may help me, and all those who read it here.
We can educate each other, and then we are all smarter.
Not just smart-alecks!
Ha!
Hugs.
