Earth Day: A Story Of Us
Are we good stewards of Mother Earth?
For the first Earth Day in 1970, cartoonist Walt Kelly trenchantly captured the core tension of humanity’s relationship to its home world as expressed through environmentalism and climate change: “We have met the enemy and he is us.”
This tagline was incorporated into a poster specifically created for the inaugural Earth Day and featured his main cartoon persona, Pogo.

After World War II ended, hundreds of thousands of Soviet soldiers returned home, but not before they had defeated the German Wehrmacht and pushed the Nazis out of their country, through several countries in Eastern Europe, and all the way to Berlin after years of bitter struggle.
Upon returning home to the Soviet Union, many soldiers ended up in gulags and subjected to hard labor. Why? In the eyes of Soviet strongman Joseph Stalin, their minds were “corrupted” by exposure to more developed European countries. Having seen the future in other European societies, they would agitate for change in their own country if left unchecked and unmonitored. This, Stalin concluded, would seriously threaten “building socialism in one country” and sidetrack the Soviet experiment.
If one listens to Donald Trump at his trial for election interference, one might get the impression that he was being subjected to inhumane conditions and tortured worse than a Soviet soldier returning home after emerging victorious over the Nazis in World War II.
Ivan Denisovich, he most certainly isn’t! Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s fictitious character — not unlike the author in real life — had endured the hardships of forced labor for a decade but had far more character and integrity. Donald Trump is simply a rapist, failed real estate developer, and obnoxious reality television host who has successfully evaded the law for decades and is now paying the price for his past criminal behavior.
It isn’t much more complicated than that — Trump’s protestations aside.

Where is Everybody?
If Trump were expecting large MAGA crowds outside the NYC Courthouse protesting his “unfair” persecution by the government, he would be sorely disappointed.
Does this portend political trouble for him? A diminishing enthusiasm among his most loyal supporters? Stay tuned.
“Donald Trump was evidently not happy with what he saw out the window of his chauffeured S.U.V. as he rode through Lower Manhattan on Monday morning for the beginning of opening arguments in his first criminal trial,” the New York Times reports.
“The scene that confronted him as he approached the dingy courthouse at 100 Centre Street was underwhelming. Across the street, at Collect Pond Park, the designated site for protesters during the trial, only a handful of Trump supporters had gathered, and the number would not grow much throughout the morning.”
“Mr. Trump has portrayed his legal jeopardy as a threat to America itself, and he has suggested that the country would not put up with it. But the streets around the courthouse on Monday were chaos-free — well-patrolled and relatively quiet.”
