Elon Musk is facing an inquiry from a Brazilian court after he commanded X employees to reinstate accounts that the court had ordered to be banned. There is talk about blocking X as a whole in response, possibly pushing X users to alternatives such as Bluesky and Mastodon. Musk is presenting himself as some free speech defender (and expert on Brazilian law), despite his long history of complying with much broader censorship orders from governments, as well as his own arbitrary censorship on X, and use of retaliatory lawsuits against critics (which then get thrown out).
I dislike how the Brazilian court issued a gag-order relating to this takedown-order. I believe that the people need to be aware of how the government is using their power. However, this is not the novelty that Musk (and right-wingers in general) make it out to be. Anyone who has been paying attention knows that gag-orders have a long history in the USA, being used for National Security Letters and libel cases, including the demand that search engines de-index certain sites. .
Right now, the US media is largely relying on Musk and his allies for information, without providing context about why Brazil issued these orders. I hope this story will be fleshed out over the next few days.
