If you are like me, you will need mental health breaks to maintain your sanity this year. For my part, I am starting my day with a great song, working alphabetically by song title (note: this does not mean a single song per letter). In comments, predict the next song, let me know a deserving song I have passed by, or tell me why this was an awful choice. Enjoy!
This song was recorded by three different Motown artists in 1966 and 1967 (and has been covered by oodles of others since then). The first two recordings, by The Miracles, and Marvin Gaye, were vetoed by Berry Gordy. The third recording, by Gladys Knight and the Pips, passed quality control and was a hit in 1967. Marvin Gaye’s version was released the following year in album format, and got so much radio play that they ended up releasing it as a single which out-sold the Gladys Knight version, and has become the definitive recording.
