This election cycle has brought about a political atmosphere that is more like a Yankees/Sox series rather than a constructive debate. What team do you pledge loyalty to? Will you wear a red or blue jersey? Is it good that most of the electorate is rooting for their "team" and going on biased sources of news? Does democracy suffer as a result of team politics?
The problem I forsee is the American voter avoiding facts in favor of an alternate version of reality that supports their team. Now, this kind of ignorance has existed since this country began but I bring it up because that line of thinking is now becoming the mainstream on both sides. Popular adoption of political ignorance will lead to dominant party rule wherein decisions are based on maintaining power and not a more perfect union.
I understand the call to arms on either side during this presdidental race, I am just afraid of it not receding after November 2nd. If you've been a lifelong Red Sox fan hell would have to freeze over before you changed your position on the Yankees. I fear that little progress will be made if we are all rooting for our team and not being critical participants in this democracy.
Politics may seem like a game most of the time but the consequences of our policies affect the world. A country where facts take a back seat to opinion and speculation is the greatest weapon of mass destruction there is.
