As it became clear that the Katrina response efforts were tied up in red tape and turf battles among agencies, several people posted addresses for
LOCAL branches of the Red Cross, Salvation Army and other organizations on the ground, at the scene, who could offer immediate assistance to people and communities affected by the storm.
I would like to have similar options to receive my dollars in the Rita-affected areas.
I wish I had thought to ask earlier this week, but can people use the comments, below, to offer addresses or other contact information for bona fide local charities in the Galveston and Houston areas (as well as in Katrina-affected communities) so we know our money will hit the right spots?
If people want to reassure the rest of us about the efficacy giving to national groups that will be providing services and aid, I would welcome that information, too.
