CEDWYN HAS THE CURRENT LIST HERE
Further updates and links to future diaries should be posted there.
This community operates on a lot of different levels. There is the obvious policy level wherein the political news that is important to progressives is shared and discussed. There is the meta level which I just love to read with buttered popcorn and a sense of humor and there is the community level that encompasses all others.
I just took a survey as an "avid reader." One of the questions was about which social networking sites I visited regularly. I don’t really use Facebook much, although I do like to visit once in a while and see what the family is up to. Nor do I tweet, although I do maintain a twitter feed and rely on it when breaking news occurs, or when I am bored.
But Daily Kos was not listed in this survey as a social network. Yet. For Daily Kos is as much about community as it is about politics. After all, politics is just the means that enables a community to function. This website has become about much more than politics. It is about how to garden, how to cook, what to cook, how to do a home repair, Craig Ferguson and insomniacs, cats, cartoons and genealogy, disability, military, science, and family, grieving, weight loss, traveling, losing a job, getting a job, feeding the homeless and electing Democrats.
Oh yes, most of our efforts are aimed at finding and working for those Democrats who most closely resemble who we are and are willing to fight for what we believe. And over the next year more diaries will be written in support of them, and more funds will be raised to help them succeed. And we will read and write about candidate meet ups and post pictures of rallies we attend and phone banks we man. We will do all of these things because that is who we are. We give a damn about this country and its future.
And we give a damn about each other. In spite of the occasional dickishness, we tend to agree about the big issues even when the details give rise to discord. And we care about each other. And we network. We are all part of that network whether we are lucky enough to play Secret Santa or lucky enough to be given a subscription.
We are even part of that network if we do neither. We are part of the network if we respond to someone’s late night cry for help. If we politely and carefully listen to someone else’s point of view even when we know they are totally wrong. We become part of the network the first time we recommend a comment or a diary. And we strengthen the network each time we respond to a diary or a comment.
All of this has bubbled up for me today because of the List. The List is a measure of how we have been able to find the resources to answer kos’ call for a subscription drive. It is also a measure of just how smart we all are to take advantage of this last chance for a lifetime subscription. I don’t know if kos realized what this would cost him in annual revenue from all of these folks who will not be paying him $40 a year in the future. Somehow, I think that he will be okay though, because as long as we keep building this community, this network, we will continue to attract a broader membership that should be able to keep him afloat.
The List, current as of this morning appears below the fold.
Onomastic is maintaining a "covert list" of the people in dire straits. If you are willing to randomly answer one of those folks' need, message Onomastic and she'll send you a name to gift.

If you have received a gift subscription, or you know of someone who has, please let me know in the comments so we can keep the list current.
Comment from Melanie in IA: I hope that AFTER the new year begins we'll still be aware of those who need help. After all, an annual subscription for someone who currently can't afford 40 bucks would still be a BIG deal to that someone. Over 12 months' time, their circumstances could improve markedly, but for that time slot, having an annual sub would sure help.
She is right, and I have changed the name of the second list to Subscribers.
Note: I will be taking the occasional break for coffee and stuff, but will continue to update just as quickly as I can.
10:50 AM PT: Onomastic just posted this in the comments:
There is a diary going up Saturday for those who would like to make smaller donations. Nurse Kelley is offering the use of her pay pal account. All donations will be pooled. As soon as $100 is reached, a name will come off the list. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.
Erich will be posting the diary, I think around 3pm est. He can confirm that. Nurse Kelley, myself and others will be helping. I think we're going to be having a party. :)
The correct time for Dr Erich Bloodaxe RNs diary on how to make a partial donation is 4:00pm Pacific Time, 7:00pm for those on the East Coast.
6:14 PM PT: Congratulations to the members of Daily Kos, on hitting 200 subscriptions!!!!
Sat Dec 17, 2011 at 12:10 PM PT: I'm back! I have updated based on your comments, and will continue to do so until Erich takes over later this afternoon/evening. As soon as his diary goes up, I will post a link to it.
