For some time, I've followed the press in Europe. It seems they cover events in the US more openly than the domestic media.
This morning, Tom McCarthy's live blog coverage of Santorum's campaign included something I find remarkable.
A screen capture from the The Guardian online is below the fold.
10:03 AM PT: I heard from a colleague a moment ago that the story is now being picked by US media, too.
10:12 AM PT: This is obviously a breaking story. I threw it together very hastily based only on the clip from The Guardian. Before I uploaded, I checked Google and there were no media outlets in the US reporting it. I hear now that Andrea Mitchell just ran it on MSNBC with a comment from Santorum saying that he didn't hear the offensive shout.
12:11 PM PT: Reporting on the "Pretend it's Obama" incident is widespread now. Santorum's reaction: "That's a very horrible and terrible remark and I'm glad I didn't hear it." How anyone could call out such a thing at this particular time is astonishing. I can't help painting the right with one broad brush and I automatically take this shout as an indication of what's on their minds as we try to absorb the magnitude of the Sanford horror. For Santorum to even appear at an event like this, right now, seems unwise.
