I'm pro-choice, but it is not something I really invest a lot of time in talking about. I wouldn't vote for an anti-choice candidate, but I don't often have the energy to debate the issue with someone. I grew up in a very conservative Evangelical household and have been debating issues my whole life. I've learned over the years that people rarely change their opinion on this matter, so I just let it go. That being said, this really has me incensed.
As the anti-choice crusade continues throughout GOP controlled states, Dr. Ann Neuhaus bravely took up the cause of women’s rights after Christian jihadist Scott Roeder murdered Dr. George Tiller in 2009. Now, Dr. Neuhaus may lose her license for the “sin” of not forcing a mentally ill ten year old to carry her uncle’s baby to term.
(more after the squiggle)
The language of this article is clearly biased, and I wanted to know more, so I went searching for a different source. Unfortunately, the only other source I could find was from Bill O'Reilly.
It sounds like the issue is that she was acting as a second opinion for Dr. George Tiller, who was assassinated for his work as an abortion doctor, when it was determined an abortion was medically necessary for mental health reasons. The prosecution wishes to revoke her license, saying that she and Tiller used mental health to justify abortions in cases where it should not have applied. The situation with the 10-year-old girl who was raped by her uncle appears to be part of the case.
When it comes to mental and physical health, I personally trust the opinions of doctors over journalists, lawyers and right-wing zealots. If it's true that the case of a 10-year-old victim of rape and incest is part of a case suggesting Dr. Neuhaus made poor judgments when consider the mental health impact of a patient, that is just plain silly.
It would be nice if a real journalist would pick up on this and do a proper investigation. It certainly sounds like a case of malicious prosecution with a political agenda. Considering the fate of Dr. Tiller, it also seems like they are poking a very dangerous bear in the process.
