Update: The recall affects dry foods for cats, dogs, and ferrets. See below the squiggle for link to the specific brands that are recalled.
I just received an alert on a recall of the following brands of natural pet food: California Natural, EVO, Healthwise, and Innova. The reason, salmonella contamination. It's in the FDA pet food alert website linked here. The listing just says "pet food" so I don't know if it's specifically cat food or dog food that's affected. To be on the safe side, assume both.
I received this alert directly from my pet food store, Long Leash on Life in Albuquerque, because I had purchased Evo dry cat food in the past. They were calling every one of their customers who'd purchased from those brands this year (how cool is that!). However I've been feeding my pootie PureVita brand (from a different company, not affected by the recall) for the last couple months, so we're okay. But since I've recommended Evo brand and talked about it in the PWB threads, I thought I should take the initiative and let you all know about the recall. We don't want any critters getting sick!
PS: Yes I know these are premium brands and probably not a lot of you use them. But if any one is - please heed the recall for your critters' sake! That is all :)

And to Zen Trainer for this info about salmonella in pets, from the CDC:
"Can dogs or cats become infected with Salmonella? What are the symptoms in dogs and cats?
"Yes, dogs and cats can get salmonellosis. They also can carry Salmonella without getting sick. Pets that become ill may stop eating and may develop diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Some cats do not have diarrhea, but have decreased appetite, fever, and excess salivation. If your pet appears ill, seek veterinary care. Most ill pets recover completely."
