It's Election Night in many states across the country, and we're liveblogging the results of races large and small. The biggest contests are for governor in New Jersey and Virginia and mayor in New York City, but there are many other hotly contested elections that are up for grabs, including attorney general and the state House of Delegates in Virginia; a key state Senate seat in Washington; and mayoral races in Boston, Seattle, and many other cities.
Results: New Jersey | New York | Virginia
7:49 PM PT (Steve Singiser): Hey folks, want the clear-cut sign that Virginia Republicans put together the mother of all inspired gerrymanders. There are currently...count 'em...five Republican incumbents winning with 50.9 percent of the vote or less. Meanwhile, the closest race tonight featuring a Democratic incumbent is Eileen Filler-Corn's razor-thin...um...56-40 victory in her NoVa district. Give them credit, their knack for political cartography not only gave them an outsized majority, it is allowing them to keep it even in a slight headwind.
7:50 PM PT (Darth Jeff): It's rare you get to lose twice in two months but outgoing Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hayes is doing just that. He was unseated in the Democratic primary by challenger Kenneth Thompson, but Hayes decided to run on the Republican line he grabbed unopposed. The gamble doesn't seem to be working: with 14 percent in, Thompson leads 70-30.
7:54 PM PT (Darth Jeff): With 37 percent reporting in Westchester County, Republican County Executive Rob Astorino maintains his 55-45 reelection lead over Democrat Noam Bramson. Bramson has reportedly conceded.
7:56 PM PT (Darth Jeff): Things still look ugly in Nassau. With 59 percent in, incumbent Republican Ed Mangano maintains his 60-39 lead over Democrat Tom Suozzi for County Executive.
8:00 PM PT (Darth Jeff): Annise Parker has won a final two-year term as Houston's mayor. With 97 percent reporting she leads with 57 percent. Parker made history by becoming Houston's first openly gay mayor with her 2009 win, and she remains the only openly gay person to run one of the five largest cities in the country.
8:01 PM PT (Steve Singiser): Democrats have now pulled ahead in New Jersey's SD-38 (Bob Gordon), and the Assembly races have tightened markedly. Assuming Democrat Linda Greenstein holds her narrow 2-point lead in SD-14, that would mean the Democrats could get away with a single-seat loss in the Assembly, and no net change in the Senate. Given how badly Barbara Buono is trailing at the top of the ticket, one suspects they'd take it.
8:04 PM PT (Darth Jeff): It looks like another mayor is on track to lose his seat tonight. Toledo's Mike Bell trails challenger Michael Collins 57-43, with 75 percent reporting.
8:06 PM PT (Darth Jeff): Final score in Boston: Walsh 55.55, Connolly 48.06.
8:12 PM PT (Darth Jeff): Detroit's mayoral race has been called for Mike Duggan. With almost all precincts in, he leads Benny Napoleon 55-45.
8:15 PM PT (Laura Clawson): The liveblog continues here.
