Some just love comparing everything to history's favorite psychopath. It's as if he just sprung straight from the head of Medusa and began terrifying the world. It's as if just by merely invoking his name any point becomes undeniably true to some.
Actually it just comes across as a bit sad, it really just says that you haven't really thought it through and have nothing new to add.
It's a bit like a spotty thirteen year old calling a teacher a Fascist just because they forgot to do their homework.
OK so you want to call something bad or evil, fine, do so, and try to outline why it is bad.
OK so you want to make it short and sweet for a sound bite on teh TeeVee, fine, OK even; but it does come across as just plain silly.
History is littered with psychopathic despots both large and small each has their own special place in demonstrating what can go wrong. The trouble is each have their own set of circumstances as to how and why, if I was to go around shouting "they are worse than Qin Shi Huang" how many would get the reference?
Comparing someone today with any historical figure without at least laying down the groundwork as to how and why is just lazy.
If a country invades for no valid reason another country, tortures people and has the largest prison population in the world would it be valid to compare it with the Third Reich, would its leaders be comparable to Adolf Hitler?
But, but context you reply.
That's right, I say.
Go for it, and if all else fails.
Benghazi.
Sigh.
