Amid leaks from "officials" to media outlets like CNN that ISIS is planning to attack "the homeland," President Obama is scheduled to deliver a statement on ISIL and
U.S. strikes that were conducted overnight against the group. President Obama's statement, which you can watch in the livestream at the top of this post, is scheduled for 10 AM ET and we'll provide live updates throughout.
6:51 AM PT: CNN has Democratic and Republican "strategists" on right now discussing the issue of the day, which is really exactly what the world needs: 15-second soundbites from political hacks on how the parties should position themselves for war.
7:02 AM PT: CNN says the president will speak for 5-7 minutes before he heads to the U.N. Climate Summit, which will no doubt be overshadowed by the war against ISIS, also called Islamic State and ISIL.
7:05 AM PT: I'm not expecting it, but it sure would be nice if Obama pointed out that our reliance on fossil fuels is directly related to both climate change and our role and interests in the Middle East.
7:12 AM PT: Here's the president: "Last night on my orders, U.S. forces began strikes against ISIL targets in Syria." Moves on to thank the soldiers carrying out his orders.
7:14 AM PT: "America is proud to stand shoulder to shoulder" with nations including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. Obama says ultimately the best way to undermine ISIL is to support opposition forces to ISIL.
7:16 AM PT: Obama says last night's strikes also targeted an Al Qaeda offshoot that he said was plotting terrorist attacks, and then quickly finished, departing for the Climate Summit, which will probably get about 1 column inch on page C8.
7:49 AM PT: Here's a the transcript of the president's remarks.
