Hello Class of 2015! Congratulations on this monumental occasion!
"Hello Class of 2015! Congratulations on this monumental occasion!
It's time to show friends and family what you can do. Your confidence is sky high and you're gonna go far! Except for your utter lack of skills and limited social grace.
You don't know that yet, none of us did; hell! some of us still don't and we've been paying down our student loans since the late 70's.
I've often been asked what social grace has to do with success. My answer is that it has nothing to do with success. It is only the adhesive that holds together this fragile contract. Social grace is not about success, it is about stability.
Social grace is simply knowing which testicle to measure the inseam on that Hong Kong silk suit pant leg if you're ever lucky enough to be the personal assistant to a vulture capitalist. No MBA ever prepares you for that, but it is a skill and grace that will at least keep you employed until the next downturn.
Skills and Grace are much more important than plastics. It takes some of us longer to figure that out. But do what you will.
So go now, my young charges; into that world of toil and dreams and a per anum debt that crippled the EU.
No one can tell you what to do or when to do it, no one could tell me and look at me now. The only answer to such a dire future is to start right now in compartmentalizing your lives so you can endure. Then you die; but not before that per anum debt is paid or saddled on a family member or loved one. But hey! The drinks are stiff and the food is rich, so you'll have that going for ya!
Now get out of here and make your mark. Just try not to hurt people too much in your myopic quest to figure out what life is.
Who luvs ya, baby?

Question: Who is your audience? What are you here for?
Answer: Tribal Alliances, Heart-felt Convictions, Passionate Reason, Random Abandon, Sustainable Civility and a kiss; to comfort the sad and the mad Ones; the Ones roaming the International section of the American Supermarket at night; or roaming the neglected streets looking for an angry malaprop to sink their teeth into; the Ones who seek without seeking and learn as much as they teach; the Ones who embrace and kiss and embrace again; the Ones who sing the song of the city and the ballads of the forest; the Ones who chant the rhythm of the sea and hum the melody of the desert; the Ones who sing the prayer of Her name and Her name is the World. Yes, those are the Ones. -- JP

Do not weep, maiden, for war is kind.
Because your lover threw wild hands toward the sky
And the affrighted steed ran on alone,
Do not weep.
War is kind.
Hoarse, booming drums of the regiment,
Little souls who thirst for fight,
These men were born to drill and die.
The unexplained glory flies above them,
Great is the battle-god, great, and his kingdom—
A field where a thousand corpses lie.
Do not weep, babe, for war is kind.
Because your father tumbled in the yellow trenches,
Raged at his breast, gulped and died,
Do not weep.
War is kind.
Swift, blazing flag of the regiment,
Eagle with crest of red and gold,
These men were born to drill and die.
Point for them the virtue of slaughter,
Make plain to them the excellence of killing
And a field where a thousand corpses lie.
Mother whose heart hung humble as a button
On the bright splendid shroud of your son,
Do not weep.
War is kind.
