Whoops! Looks like my edits didn’t take. What a perfect way to begin Week 23 of The Presidential Apprentice, and the week in which we’re poised to find out whether the Republican health care tax cut bill squeaks through the Senate or not.
Hang on for the ride. Then, hang on for dear life.

It's a summertime Friday, and I'm on the road. But I couldn't leave you for the weekend without some fodder for clever conversation. Trump’s buddies at Bayrock, including the infamous Felix Sater, are back in the news, somehow. And it's always a good time to remind people of Trump’s weird affinity for shady Russian characters. So we do. What does history teach us about dealing with political leaders who are incompetent or outright insane? Well, that’s typically only a problem in royal courts. But the Trump “administration” has much more in common with them than it does with ordinary American presidencies. So maybe it's worth a little review. Speaking of royal courts, here's a helpful backgrounder on what's been going on between Saudish Arabia and their neighbors in Qatar. Our trusty Michigan correspondent Rosalyn MacGregor gives us a preview of the Democratic field in the 2018 gubernatorial primary. Shifting the focus back to Trump, his Office of Government Ethics financial disclosure has some less-than-surprising news: he's making a fortune off the presidency. And remember when that one year of Trump’s tax filings (2005) mysteriously became public, and was the only year in the last 20 or so for which we had any information, and was curiously favorable for him, showing he'd made significant tax payments? Has he been getting that payment funneled right back into his pockets as refunds since then? And in late-breaking Thursday news: Trump’s stunt at the Carrier plant crumbles, as usual.
