The Planes of Fame Air Museum is located at the Chino, California, airport. The museum was founded in 1957 by Edward T. Maloney with just 10 airplanes. Today the museum has over 150 aircraft, of which more than 50 are flyable. The Mission of Planes of Fame Air Museum is to preserve aviation history, inspire interest in aviation, educate the public, and honor aviation pioneers and veterans. Shown below are some of the jet airplanes which are on display.
F-86 Sabre Jet
This was the first swept-wing American jet fighter. This fighter flew in the Korean Conflict 1950-1953 and has been credited as one of the factors that prevented a Chinese victory in Korea.
Lockheed P-80A Shooting Star
This was an early (1943) jet fighter-bomber. It was the first U.S. operational jet. It had a top speed of 410 mph and a range of 540 miles.
Douglas D558-2 Skyrocket
The Navy Skyrocket Research Aircraft was designed to provide data for transonic and supersonic flight. It was built in 1948. A total of 3 of these aircraft were built. It has a maximum speed of 1,290 mph. According to the Museum display:
“The Skyrocket was part of a transonic flight investigation project started by the US Navy in late 1944, similar to the X-1 program.”
