The victory of Gabriel Sanchez over Georgia Representative Teri Anulewicz in the Democratic primary for the Smyrna-area Cobb County Georgia House seat shocked a lot of people here.
It surprised me a bit, but I certainly wasn’t shocked. HD-42 is a very progressive district, probably much more progressive than most Atlanta-area pundits realize.
Sanchez was a very hard-working candidate. I’m not saying Anulewicz doesn’t work hard, but I think she might have underestimated Sanchez’s support.
John Tures, a political science professor who writes columns for us (the Cobb County Courier, I’m the editor and publisher), did a bit of analysis of some of the factors that caused Sanchez to outperform socialist candidates in other, purportedly more progressive parts of the U.S.
