I understand that Texas, Mississippi and potentially other states are taking it upon themselves to remove any and all coronavirus-related restrictions.
Before the rescue act gets passed, I urge the Senate to include a provision that no (zero, nada) federal dollars get distributed to any state that is not following appropriate public health recommendations.
It has national importance, since Covid does not respect state borders. Will this hurt individuals and businesses in those jurisdictions? Yes & I hate that. But I guess that means that a critical mass of those people will need to take immediate action showing their governors and legislators that they need to comply. Then the money, from escrow, can flow.
But I, for one, am sick and tired of these places railing against government and not suffering any consequences, then asking the rest of the country to bail them out when it really matters. (And don’t get me started on providing rate relief to ‘deregulated’ Texas with my tax dollars….)
If your state has, for 50+ years, intentionally and cynically neglected to support its citizens and cities, and that is the real cause of their current problem, it is time for the real political pain to be felt where it is truly and actually deserved.
