Over these past few days I, as well I'm sure many of you, have been bombarded with emails, Facebook & Twitter posts reminding us that a lot of really good people voted for Donald Trump. I know many of these good people. I know they love their families, their country, their Faith.
They cherish the founding principals of our country, the promise of our Declaration of Independence, the laws set forth in our Constitution, and freedoms granted in our Bill of Rights. They just have a little problem with some of the parts like all men being created equal, the granting of justice for all, right to free assembly, freedom of speech, etc.
Many are good Christians who attend church regularly and believe in the Bible. Maybe just not those passages about being your brothers' keeper and loving thy neighbor, especially if your neighbor is gay, black, Hispanic, Asian, Muslim or a woman. And after all, is it really that big a deal that 22 million people are about to lose their healthcare and thousands of healthcare workers jobs are also on the line? And do our Seniors really need Social Security and Medicare? Do poor and middle class families need access to pre-and postnatal care, birth control, and even clinics or hospitals?
It's not fair to these good people to call them racists, homophobes, bigots and misogynists just because of their support for a man who is all these things and more as leader of our country. History has shown us that many good Germans felt just awful after 6 million Jews were annihilated along with untold numbers of gays, Poles, Hungarians, intellectuals, etc. And I have every reason to believe that many of these good people who voted for Trump will also feel some remorse when all is said and done, and I truly hope it won't just be because of the impact his and the Republican Congress' destructive policies will have on their own investment portfolios and home values.
Yes, a lot of good people voted for Hillary, too. And please don't look too unkindly on those out there protesting against the election of Mr. Trump. For there is a good chance many of you just may be joining them in the very near future.
