A lot of progressives, a lot of Bernie supporters, a lot of people who just stayed home, are under the mistaken impression that this crushing defeat will “Teach the Dems a Lesson.” Whatever you think of that attitude, it is real, I’ve seen it in a number of places since last night. The idea that if the base doesn’t turn out to vote for your candidate, that will force the Party to take a long, hard look at what it did wrong, and make some changes.
I would like to disabuse them of that notion. The Clintons have personally taken a huge hit. The Democratic Party mandarins, elected officials, hangers-on, gadflies? Not so much. They still have their jobs. They still have the ear of Wall St., of the MIC, of the media… Kos still has his website, everyone else still has their shtick.
What does ‘winning’ actually bring them? It brings the responsibility of governing, which in reality means doing what their big money paymasters demand while attempting to justify the same to their ‘base’, to real living, breathing, tax-shelter challenged Americans who voted for them. Who needs the hassle? I mean, look what happened to Daily Kos when Obama won in ‘08! Instant divisions between the “support the President!” faction and the “make him actually do something!” people. Things were so much simpler when Dubya ran the show, we could all have our Two Minutes Hate and feel good discussion (ps: some people have called me a cynic).
So, what is the DNC to do? Fundraise, of course. They’ll be firing up that call center, re-booting the bulk emailer, updating lists and writing new scripts. ‘Cause we have to Stop Trump !!1!, doncha know. So, how long before you get that 1st DNC fundraising email?
