For part of my yute, Chicago had a number of dailies, the trib, the suntimes, and several others covering different issues from a variety of political points of view. There were times when a couple had virtually identical headlines, but with radically different takes on the same story. Most of the papers died, were bought out, or petered out like the urine flow of prostate sufferer. We have two paper left, both of which have been battered, broiled and deep fried by various ownership changes and staff cuts. The Trib, once a respected, but conservative paper with international journalists and a global reach, has become a news - free collection of ads. The Suntimes, also news free, decided to buy into USA Toady for its five solid pages of news squibs. At least it has four crosswords, Sudoku, and KenKen, and probably the best sports reporting in Chicago (ignoring the crime pages - which seem to often involves sports stars). It also has the worst apologist for the GOP outside of the WaPo and the pathetic rag that was once known as New York's Grey Lady.

From the church of ineffable stupidity - today's sAint- Steve Huntley, Chicago Suntimes' gift to the auto-lobotomized.

I swear that I am not making this up. Seriesly, I am not that mulch of a moran. Here is the actual, factual, batshitual quote about her upcoming 2016 campaign, from Bible Spice herself:

“Without putting any words in my mouth, you can absolutely say that I’m seriously interested.”
"The Audacity of Dope" comes to mind as a new campaign slogan. Maybe even, "A Kindler, Gentilier Nation?" Perhaps her Family Values daughter will help her with "She's making us Prudes again."
Shoppers at Kroger on Victory Drive late Saturday got a surprise campaign appearance in the store's parking lot.

Savannah Morning News reader Marcia Neblet got these shots of a vehicle sporting a campaign sign for Sarah Palin's bid for the White House in 2016.

The sign reads: "Fed up with the LIES?! Sarah Palin for President 2016. Most Qualified, Presidential, Honest, Vetted (for 8 years) to date, Pro Constitution, Free Speech, Gun Rights."

Sense & Sensibility - a World Premiere

by agnostic

One of the many things that make Chicago such a absolutely fantastic city is the culture. (Yes, we do make good yogurt, too) Opera, theater, movie making, symphonies, and every kind of music you can imagine, even those gawdawful exports from the US' southern parts (that western stuff, country, and BillyHilly music) will fill your eyes and ears with delightful sensations.

Chicago is also home the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, a good thing since Billy the Bard was clearly a Chicago native, just as some southerners claim that Jesus was american and the bible doth been writ in the Laird's English.

Sense and Sensibility, a brand new musical production, opened up this month.

One word sums it up. G L O R I O U S !

Our whirled in review

by agnostic

News Item: The USGS announces that man-made earthquakes are on the rise as oil, gas and fracking efforts are found to be the cause of these potential disasters.

GOP Response: The GOP leadership announced plans to defund the USGS. They (and their ALEC/Koch masters) believe that no news will be good news.

News Item: NASA's earth watching satellites confirm that global warming is a fact, and that it is accelerating. Damage to low-lying areas around the globe are already posing threats to millions.

GOP Response: The GOP leadership announced new funding guidelines, precluding NASA from ever viewing the earth for signs of global climate change.

What A Cra%%¥ Logo.

by agnostic

What a lame intro video.

Without naming names, someone who is NOT named Marco Polo Rubio, decided to run a campaign to become president. That person did not mention labor, workers compensation, or a whole slew of other issues. To be sure, there was some minimal effort to look like a muddle of the Rhodes type of Pol, but after such a long history, that is totally unbelievable to most outsiders.

Forget the van. Forget the street of Wall ties. Forget the close ties to corporate boards. Forget the massive fees for simply appearing and speaking (and the recollection of Wassily Sarah CAPITALizing on simply showing up). Forget that person's avoidance of any difficult issue - shades of some years ago, just forget.

Kansas - its headlong dash to 1854

by agnostic

In 1854, the United States made the mistake of opening Kansas up to settlement. What resulted was a mad dash between slave holders, abolitionists, and future TeaBaggers (although they would first steal carpets in order to make bags after a minor skirmish a decade in the future).

The resulting bloodbath was known as Bleeding Kansas..

What is striking about those days is how often and how strongly the pro-slavery forces relied on their Bible. They repeatedly claimed that slavery was not only permitted because of their religious freedoms, but that it was better for society at large to have slaves and the god-blessed owner class.

It appears that Governor Brownback is aiming to return his state to those good olde days.

Chicago's Mayoral Race

by agnostic

Wow. Just wow. On the heels of news that Netanyahu's re-election campaign is hitting the skids, the story from Chicago just adds cream to the pie.

As some here know, there is a run-off election in Chicago. Current Mayor and DINO Rahm Emanuel failed to get 50%, despite numerous sTalking heads promising a clear victory last month. Jesus Chuy Garcia came in second, surprisingly close to Rahm. In third, carrying the black protest vote, was Wille Wilson, a self-made multi-millionaire who financed his own campaign.

Rahm has been courting the Willie voter ever since the election. Willie played hard to get, even after President Obama called him and asked him to toss his support to Rahm.

Here is today's Chi-Suntimes article on the result:

Doctors around the whirled have long pushed Statins as a magical mystery tour of health and eternal yute. That might have to be amended to "infernal" instead.  By forcefully (and I mean forcefully)  lowering cholesterol levels, they predicted that routine Statin use by healthy people would prevent heart disease and lead to longer, healthier lives. Not to mention much higher profits for statin drug makers.

Not everyone got on board for the maiden voyage of the SS Statin Express, however. Some docs questioned whether a healthy person should jerk around his/her/its cholesterol levels, especially since cholesterol plays such a major role in your health. Those that didn't are now counting their blessings and new and improved studies start casting aspersions on the widespread use of these drugs.

The Hastert Rule Is Dead

by agnostic

For those too lazy to use "teh google,"

The Hastert Rule: also known as the "majority of the majority" rule, is an informal governing principle used by Republican Speakers of the House of Representatives since the mid-1990s to maintain their speakerships and limit the power of the minority party to bring bills up for a vote on the floor of the House. Under the doctrine, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives will not allow a floor vote on a bill unless a majority of the majority party supports the bill.

Under the rules of the House, the Speaker schedules floor votes on pending legislation. The Hastert Rule says that the Speaker will not schedule a floor vote on any bill that does not have majority support within his/her party — even if the majority of the members of the House would vote to pass it. The rule keeps the minority party from passing bills with the assistance of a small number of majority party members. 218 votes are needed to pass a bill in the House; if the Democrats are the minority and the Republicans are the majority, the Hastert Rule would not allow 170 Democrats and 50 Republicans together to pass a bill, because 50 Republicans votes is far short of a majority of the majority party, so the Speaker would not allow a vote to take place.

Quite uncharacteristically (for me), I have been biting my tongue about Bibi (Bibi- translation from Lithuanian) ) and his Boehnered love affair that happens tomorrow in Congress.

To be honest, my oral surgeon suggests I stop blogging, if I want the teeth marks to heal. Nevertheless, we finally have confirmation why so many on the Reich Side are so willing to applaud and cheer Bibi when he tries to destroy any possibility of peace in the Muddle East.

One News Now, a ridiculous collection of "morans," idiots, Palinesque Panderers, ultra-conservative christians, and auto-lobotomized buffoons who think anyone who is progressive has a pact with satan, and supporting ObamaCare is paving the way to hell, had a doozy today.

These folks finally admitted why they are so pro-Bibi. The simple answer? "End Of Times."

Fool Disclosure: I refuse to drudge up my computer, but still feel the perverse need to see what our biggest domestic enema is doing and what they are saying. Much like reading Mein Kampf, Mao's Little Red Book, or reading various Stalinist treatises which formed the basis of mass deportation, arrest, torture and death, you need to know what the bad guys are saying. For those who luckily avoided their crap before, OneNewsNow is the propaganda arm of the American Family Association, providing rabid, allegedly biblical analysis of today's events - in a fashion that you would expect from a hate group. The Southern Poverty Law group has repeated called this collection of weasels racist, sexist, and worse. I often think that Southern Poverty is just too polite and kind.

The AFA recently made the news when even they found the insane screeching noises coming from their most infamous rectal fistula, Brian Fischer, to be too much for them.( Brian Fischer shit-canned, wiped, and flushed. )

Despite the bad publicity, many GOP conservative christian congresscritters still went ahead with their all expenses paid trip to Israel, to kiss the butt of Bibi and other war-mongerers. (interestingly, conservative Baptist and Professional tax dollar travel whore, Aaron Schock apparently chose NOT to visit Bib)

There is one, and only one reason why they are going apeshit over Bibi's upcoming speech. They want war to break out, in order to usher in biblical end of times.

The Passenger - A new offering

by agnostic

The Lyric Opera of Chicago opened with a new show, at least for this side of the Pond.
The Passenger, an opera by Mieczysław Weinberg to a libretto by Alexander Medvedev, had its origins in a 1963 story by a survivor of Auschwitz. It was turned into an opera, and was initially performed in 1968. It was to be performed by the Bolshoi in 2003, but was not actually staged until 2006. The reactions abroad are worthy of a Google search.

Yesterday was its American debut.

The story is both simple and complex. The year is 1960. A German woman and her diplomat hubby are on a slow boat to Brazil for his new posting. She spots someone who she thinks she recognizes, a prisoner in Auschwitz that she repeatedly and constantly abused while she was a prison guard for the SS.

Rarely has an opera been so emotionally and visually impacting. After the first half was over, the crowd was utterly silent. Shock, not dislike.
