A couple of weeks ago we got to see one of our favorite bands play in Spartanburg. The remarkable thing about it, for us, was that the band disbanded in early 2011! So seeing them together again was a rare treat.

Some years ago, when I was very new to Daily Kos, I wrote a Top Comments diary that remains one of the ones I feel best about. brillig’s terrific diary last night brought it to mind again, so I thought it time to resuscitate it.

I am writing in response to the fine Mother’s Day Proclamation brillig cited in last night’s diary. The Proclamation was originally written by Julia Ward Howe, in 1870. I am not providing the text of the Proclamation, nor links to Julia Ward Howe’s bio or further info on the Proclamation, itself. They are linked in brillig’s diary. Please refer to those links!

I will summarize, however. In short, the Proclamation is a call to (anything-but) arms for women and mothers to unite and call for world peace. I think with great dismay of the millions of human beings who have been killed in the many years since then.

Peace is one of the strongest themes and motivations in my life. It is addressed in my permanent sig line on Daily Kos (soon to be eliminated, I realize), with Jonathan Larson’s great quotation and its insights into peace. So in that spirit, here is what I wrote for Top Comments back in 2006. With light edits, with the original author’s consent (since that was me).

As everyone knows, the arguments about marriage equality were given before the Supreme Court this week. I haven't read any of the live blogs, and only a little of the coverage. And I know there are few 'places' on Earth the Supremes are LESS likely to visitmuchlessconsider than an obscure Friday KTK diary on Daily Kos. Yet, here I am, writing to them, all the same.

Top Comments - Rumblings and Ramblings

A USA Today article today by Susan Page says that a USAToday/Suffolk University poll notes that a 51-35% majority says it is no longer ‘practical’ for the Supreme Court to ban marriage equality because it is now supported and happening in so many states.

Of course, for so many millions of us, attempts to prevent marriage equality from coming to pass were unconscionably discriminatory from the start. It’s an issue that should have been decided before all of those finally married were ever born. Finally the poll numbers are showing what the society already knows - it’s what’s right for our society and our people.

On April 10, Time dot com posted an article on Rand Paul, by Chris Moody, highlighting what it referred to as a ‘two-front war’ Paul is facing as a presidential candidate. I have a different thesis, but let’s look at theirs for a moment. Moody writes:

Only a few days removed from his splashy debut as a presidential candidate -- complete with a "Defeat the Washington Machine" campaign slogan -- Rand Paul is taking fire from all sides.

Top Comments - Time for Call Out

I guess we all tend to get into thematic patterns in our writing. We are drawn to things that interest us, that ‘capture’ us, after a fashion. We can learn a great deal about ourselves by analyzing these things, by examining the evolution of our thought on our themes, by finding ways to push them further.

On Friday I posted a diary for KTK about Mike Pence, and some of his failings in governance. He has been exhibit one, lately, for his handling of the Indiana legislative fiasco on government sanctioned discrimination against our LGBT sisters and brothers.

In one of his many press events trying to cope with the bigotry fiasco, Republican Indiana governor, Mike Pence, inadvertently provided astonishingly clear insight into the problem faced by every elected Republican - perception. He claimed the brouhaha in Indiana was a perception problem.

That's always the answer for them, marketing, messaging, framing ... Never content. Never the essence of what they're doing.

My dear brother (three years my junior) and I have been working on our relationship since childhood. As his ‘big brother,’ in those early years, I am sorry to say I made his life very hard, sometimes. It was so long ago, I don’t remember much of what it was like, what I thought, what I intended. But I do remember being mean to him, where there was never a time later in our lives when I would do anything like that - to him or anyone else.

Now I rejoice in our times together, in our times of laughing and sharing. It was with great joy that I received his invitation to go with him to see Elton John when he came to town several weeks ago (Mar. 13, to be exact.) It was a marvelous concert, as you would expect. I had not seen him live since a concert many many years ago, when he sang for us a new release, ‘Rocket Man.’ Turns out that was released in 1972, and was only about to be released, as I recall it, when he played it for us in concert then. So it has to have been that long ago. Man.

(I have written at least two diaries about my brother, from the time of his battle with lymphoma, and then his victorious moment. I hope my love and regard for him shows through in those! Those remain my HAPPIEST Top Comments diaries.)

Top Comments is exploring the idea of adding some new diarists, so I thought it might be a good time to discuss some of the aspects of writing for a community diary series. Most of my blogging experience has been under the Top Comments 'umbrella,' so my experience outside of Top Comments is somewhat limited. Too, it is possible that some of the things I mention may be TC-specific, so please understand I am not trying to make generalizations that apply to every other community diary series. I do hope other TC diarists chime in with their unique perspectives, and that diarists from other Daily Kos communities will talk about their experiences, as well!

We often talk about human dignity, and, regardless of one's political affiliation, that seems important to most human beings. I was struck this weekend by a picture I saw in an ad by a large (unnamed by me) national company that outfits people primarily for hunting and fishing (fuck 'em.).

Lindsey Graham revealed on Meet the Press Sunday in an interview with Chuck Todd that he has never used toilet paper. Nope, never used it. 'You can have every piece of toilet paper I've ever used,' Graham told Todd. 'I've never used any.'

Tara the Antisocial Social Worker wrote a marvelous diary for Top Comments two nights ago, with musings on the original Star Trek and Spock, perhaps the series' signature character. Leonard Nimoy's (RIP) fine character has provoked as much thought, perhaps, as any fictional character ever has. And tonight a bit more.
