Welcome to the May 1, 2015 Post Game Show for Mojo Friday!

Today, TexDem asks if you are a Leader or a Manager?  Ask that question of our politicians ... at the local, state and national level.  They're not managers.  The vast majority of them clearly aren't leaders.

What's that phrase from my Texas colleagues, "S/He couldn't pour shit out of a boot if if the directions were on the heel"?

Most of them are followers. Not inspired by something else, but pulled by the nose by the people and funders they pander too.  If you removed their ring, could they lead? could they manage? I think most of them would drop in place until someone came by with a replacement ring.

While TexDem spoke about Leading vs. Managing, I think there is a leader variant worth calling out. That is Stewardship.  Stewardship recognizes that what you are responsible and accountable for isn't yours.  It belongs to a larger group.  Stewardship leadership means that you need to understand what the needs of that larger group are, and lead and manage in that context.  It isn't yours to do, willy nilly, whatever you'd like.  And that, too, is where most of our politicians fail.

Because, in the end, most of them seem to think it's there for them ("grab the brass ring") and then to hell with anyone else ("full steam ahead, damn the torpedos!"). Good political leadership is good stewardship.  And we so rarely, rarely see it. We deserve better.

Why don't we use our voting power to get better?

And now for the fun.

Welcome to the April 24, 2015 Post Game Show for Mojo Friday!

There is no doubt in my mind that President Obama is the most personal president we've had, in decades.  Especially with kids!  Kennedy might come close I think.  But the way he engages with people, with children, in all kinds of settings is so striking and especially wonderful I think.  Learning that he personally reads at least 10 letters a day from the people (it's easy to let staff take care of that!), shows how much he tries to stay in touch with the real world. His passion for his wife and children is wonderful to see in a family.  Especially in the First family.

Thank you, bsegel, for sharing some of those videos with us!  And thank you, President Obama, for reminding us that a President can be a loving spouse and parent, can love other people, and can have fun in the job.  Keep it up!

Welcome to the April 10 Post Game Show for Mojo Friday!

texDem expresses a little, ahem, cynicism, about what next?, as we put cameras everyone on the police.  Frankly, the answer is transparency.  The entire purpose of these things is to create a transparent process, to highlight what happened.  It means that the person wearing a camera should not have the option to turn it off.  The camera in the car should always be on.  All video is saved (storage is cheap, I say, CHEAP!, these days!  It should not be deletable or editable in that saved form.  Download a copy and edit to your hearts content, I say.  But the original footage (yes, I know it's digital video) never gets touched.

Otherwise, well, all of those things (turning it off, not saving everything, editing original footage) means that people who have done wrong can cover their tracks.  And the ones mostly likely to try doing it, are just those who shouldn't.

Put it in the Google cloud for all I care. But keep it all!

and now for the fun!

Welcome to the April 3, 2015 Post Game Show for Mojo Friday!

I have to admit, when I read the 1st part of the title for today's Mojo Friday diary, I thought TexDem was talking about republicans.

Oops, they did it again!

In their little protective wombs of republican culture, isolated (intentionally) from the rest of the world, and from the real world for the most part, they passed a law.  One more.  Designed to control the rest of the world.  Kind of like Dr. Evil, you know.  But they're not comedic ... although it is funny watching them scurry around like bugs when the rock they hide under is lifted up and the light of day shines (I avoided calling them cockroaches, as that seemed to offend another diarist earlier this week).  The latest is declaring that their religious freedom means they control ours.  They define religious prosecution and persecution (and there are far too many examples of that, around the world today and throughout history) as being offended at having to be citizens in a diverse community.  It's not freedom they want, its power.  It's not religion that motivates them, it's fear (at best) and greed.

Aaaaarrrggghhh!

Anyways, let's have some fun.

Welcome to the March 27. 2015 Post Game Show for Mojo Friday!

Poor TexDem, he's sad about March Madness, as his beloved Tar Heels didn't make the sweet 16.  Me, well, I don't really care!  My alma mater played Division 3 sports (except for Hockey) ... so I never became a fan of big-time college sports. Which makes the annual rush around a football championship humorous, and march madness, well, march silliness.

Actually it's march annoying as well, as restaurants and bars get overpacked and aren't a place to have a pleasant meal while those silly games are going on.  We end up at slightly upscale places when we each out (or really down scale!) ... but we survive.

How 'bout you? What's your take on March Madness. Take our poll below and let us know.

Meanwhile, for fun ...

Welcome to the Friday the 13th of March 2015 Post Game Show for Mojo Friday!

So today is Friday the 13th, hence the theme of today's Mojo Friday Diary: Triskaidekaphobia.  After the adventures of the Republican Party last week, I set out to discover what the Fear of 47 might be.  Boy, was that fun!

First up was a verse from the Bible ... Lamentations 3:47 captured best by the New Living Translation, I thought:

We are filled with fear, for we are trapped, devastated, and ruined.
If that doesn't describe the Republican party today, I don't know what else does. For they are clearly filled with fear ... of bloody everything as far as I can tell.  They clearly feel trapped, devastated and ruined, for why else would they flail around so wildly, trying to hit and hurt everything they can.  Even, seemingly, those they love?

But that wasn't all! Apparently Californian's passed Proposition #47 last fall:

The recent voter-approved ballot proposition reduces a handful of nonviolent crimes from felonies to misdemeanors, including the simple possession of most drugs for personal use and theft of items valued at less than $950.
[ref: Santa Maria Sun] where this is just one article about law and order types having a hissy fit because their private sector prison friends won't be able to lock up and abuse people for years over small crimes.

Meanwhile, No Fear Shakespeare brings us Sonnet 47.

Betwixt mine eye and heart a league is took,
And each doth good turns now unto the other.
When that mine eye is famished for a look,
Or heart in love with sighs himself doth smother,
With my love’s picture then my eye doth feast
And to the painted banquet bids my heart.
Move on citizens, nothing to fear, nothing here!

And I found something else to not fear (indeed, to drool over), a nice Cape Fear 47 yacht! Courtesy of Yacht World!

So maybe the good in 47 outweighs the fear. What do you think? And now for the fun!

Welcome to the March 6, 2015 Post Game Show for Mojo Friday!

Let's hear it folks! What drives you nuts about other people's writing because we know yours is perfect?
Well, our poll below will ask you to highlight how much you get annoyed with other people's writing skills ...

Except mine of course. Which are perfect.

Well, most of the time.

Some of the time?

Man, you guys are mean!

Occasionally?

I tend to be pretty relaxed about grammar and writing skills, as I work for a large multi-national, and the organization I work for has people and teams scattered around the entire globe.  West coast and east coast (and north middle and south middle).  Latin America.  Europe (Northern, Southern, Western and Eastern), and the Asia Pacific region (down under and up above!). For many of my colleagues, English is a second language.  Some learning it early in their lives. Others, well not so early!

Been working for a large multi-national most of my working life, so I'm pretty inured to grammar, to word choice, and quite accustomed to listening for accents.  Which over nearly 40 years has helped me really to try and focus on what they say, what they intend to say, and what I think they mean, and not so much on how they've said it and/or expressed themselves.

Not a bad habit to be in ... most of the time!

What do you think?

And now for the fun!

Welcome to the February 27, 2015 Post Game Show for Mojo Friday!

What color is this dress?

What an unusual item for a dialogue, a conversation, a war to break out on the Internet the past 48 hours.  Blue? Black? Gold? White?  ... chartreuse?

Maybe we needed a break from Washington ... and the debate (?) over DHS funding, and immigration. Health Care and Social Security?  Or, really, the rabid republicans discovering that governing means acting like rationale adults, not acting like 4-year olds throwing a tantrum (my apologies now to all 4 year olds, I don't mean to call you republicans!)

Or a break from the snow.  Anyways, it's been a pretty busy and hectic week here, so I definitely needed that break too.

Meanwhile, in our poll, tell us what you think the color is!

And I can't leave with out a big call out to Mr. Spock - Leonard Nimoy, who passed away today.  I remember watching the original Star Trek Series when it broadcast, junior-high science fiction nut that I was. I couldn't get enough of it then, and my love for science fiction (and fantasy) still lives with me today.  A great loss.

And now for the fun.

Welcome to the Feb. 20, 2015 Post Game Show for Mojo Friday!

Not much diary today ... too much work to do after travelling much of the last two weeks. But somehow many of the Republican presidential candidates don't seem to be as clever as a crow.  in my opinion.

Oh well.

Squirrel!  Isn't that exactly a perfect one word summary of how the Republican's manage?  And their strategies?  They'll literally say and do anything to avoid people realizing exactly what they stand for, the implications of the strategies they would like to enact into law, the implications of the laws they'd like to cancel, the policies they want, etc.

SQUIRREL!

Pick a topic.  Any topic. Anything relating to people, this country, our world.  Our children. Our health. The climate.  Disagreements between states.  Beween religions. The balance between individual rights and social rights.

They don't want to discuss.  They want to confuse you, make you look at something else. Just like a 3-card monte dealer, no?

And then, when things happen (see the image above for the results of 30 years of trickle down economics), they blame the people who opposed it at the start.

Sigh ...

SQUIRREL!

Welcome to the January 30, 2015 Post Game Show for Mojo Friday!

Take our poll, and tell us you're rooting for, or not, in Sunday's game!

I do enjoy the Superbowl commercials.  I'm not as religious as others about the need for them to premiere during the game, but that's ok!  There's a wave of creativity and panache that is exhibited that is fun (as someone in the marketing profession, I especially enjoy them).  But it's the commercials you won't see, but perhaps ought to.

For example, there will be a lot of talk about deflategate (I am a Patriots fan, just letting you know!).  But I"m also a concerned citizen ... The political cartoon above (taken from Newday, but published in The Indy Star, shows the republicans taking the air out of tax reform, out of tax fairness, out of helping the poor and middle class, addressing income inequality ... and they continue to take the air out of any discussions of economic policies that have now failed for 30 years.

Or this one (from The Weekly Standard, again via NewsDay), which shows a whole grab bag of issues that we ought to be discussing ... with all the vigor and energy shown for underinflated footballs. But, alas, we don't.  Because the republicans deflate every discussion.

I'd love to see some progressive commercials challenging republican dogma during the Superbowl.  But it ain't gonna happen.

sigh.

and now for the fun!

Welcome to the January 23, 2015 Post Game Show for Mojo Friday!

It isn't just original artists (Grace Potter, for example), who are hidden away by other artists performing their work.  And it isn't just in music where this happens.  As I saw TexDem's diary today, I had also seen this article on Slate.com: Texas Used Junk Science to Restrict Abortion.  In this case, a discredited scientist, Vincent Rue, is advising experts who are to appear in court as to how they should present findings, offered feedback on written reports (which they hadn't seen yet), or refuted testimony, all on faulty and discredited work. And all with these other "experts" denying they'd had advice from him on these topics, only to be discredited themselves by their email trails when finally exposed.

Indeed, it appears that some courts appear to be quite happy with the "he said, she said" counterarguments, despite overwhelming evidence that what "she said" is backed up by tons of research and testimony, and what "he said" is, well, not.  Indeed, the article says at one point,

"So it was a pleasant surprise when Judge Catharina Haynes—who voted to uphold other portions of H.B. 2 in an earlier challenge—questioned whether the law was medically justified. “You can kind of find an expert to say anything,” she told the state’s attorney. “Are we saying if you can find someone in the world to say we need marble floors in an abortion clinic, then that would be good enough to allow the Texas legislature to pass that?”
Sigh.

Liars. Cheaters. Frauds.  Not Grace Potter. She's delightful in performance, and just wonderful with her song writing.  It's these others that drive me bonkers, and we need to make sure our courts rule on evidence, not just weigh any expert as "credible" because they showed up and talked.

This applies to climate change too, of course!

Anyways, now for the fun
